**Training Dates**: 3rd May 2023 (10am-1pm) - Training will be carried out remotely via Zoom.

**Locations**: Schools will be located in six geographical regions of England (Yorkshire and Humber,

North East, North West, East Midlands, West Midlands, South West). It would be beneficial if you lived in or close to any of these areas. Alternatively, you may live in other areas and be willing to travel and stay overnight.

**Introduction**

The York Trials Unit works in partnership with colleagues to undertake national, scientifically rigorous, randomised trials of the effectiveness and efficiency of existing or potential interventions in health care, education and crime and justice. The work conducted in the field of education helps policymakers use knowledge about effective programmes and practices to help children succeed in school.

Thinking, Doing, Talking Science (TDTS) is a professional development programme for primary school teachers designed to improve science outcomes in children by making science lessons more focused, creative and effective. Researchers at York Trials Unit, University of York, are evaluating the TDTS programme as part of a 2-year randomised controlled trial. The trial is funded by the Education Endowment

**Main purpose and details of the role**

The purpose of the role will be to attend pre-scheduled appointments in schools between 5th June and 14th

July 2023 to invigilate a science assessment undertaken by classes of Year 5 children. The invigilator will be responsible for overseeing a class of Year 5 pupils undertaking a 1-hour science assessment at the same time, under exam conditions. In most cases, invigilators will oversee multiple Year 5 classes complete the assessment throughout the day during their visit to a school.

The invigilator will:

- ensure a calm environment is provided for pupils to help them perform at their best,
- ensure that the pupils understand what the assessment involves,
- distribute the correct paper to the correct pupil,
- ensure pupils each complete the assessment independently
- collate completed exam papers as per provided instructions, ready for courier collection at the school.

Schools will be located in six geographical regions in England:

- Yorkshire and the Humber - e.g. Leeds, Hull
- North East - e.g. Northumberland, Newcastle upon Tyne, County Durham, Middlesbrough
- North West - e.g. Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn
- East Midlands - e.g. Newark-on-Trent, Lincoln, Skegness
- West Midlands - Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent
- South West - e.g. Exeter, Plymouth

The role will involve travel within one of these specified regions although you may be asked to travel across regions if necessary. The working day includes travel to and from schools with the actual assessment taking approximately 1 hour per class. Travelling time is classed as part of the working day and will be paid at the hourly rate. Invigilators will be required to arrive at the relevant school between 08:30-09:00am and will typically finish no later than 3:15pm (at the end of the school day). required to only invigilate one class at a particular school. You may be required to visit more than one school in a day.

It is desirable (but not essential) that you can drive and have access to a vehicle in order to visit schools

(you would require a full driving licence and would need to add ‘business use’ to your car insurance policy, if you do not already have this, which may or may not incur additional charges which cannot be reimbursed). You can claim 45p per mile when using your own car to visit schools. If you live outside of the areas listed above, overnight stays are highly likely. Accommodation and rail travel (if applicable) will be booked by the research team in advance and you will be able to claim back expenses according to the

University of York Travel and Expenses Policy.

Full training will be provided to ensure Invigilators are fully prepared for the school visits.

**Appointment for this position is dependent on a clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check,**

**which will be undertaken if you have been successful following interview, as this role involves working**

**with children in schools. Evidence of entitlement to live and work in the UK will also be required.**
