**The organisation**:
The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an international charity working to give all young people - regardless of background - the speaking and listening skills and the cross-cultural understanding to enable them to thrive.

Founded in 1918 by the author and journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench, the ESU brings together and empowers people of all cultures and nationalities by building confidence and shaping communication skills, so that individuals can realise their full potential. In our 36 branches in England and Wales and 54 international branches, the ESU carries out a variety of activities such as: competitions, debating, public speaking and student exchange programmes, teacher training, classroom outreach, research and scholarships. All of these encourage the effective use of the English language around the world.

Our programmes are underpinned by over 100 years’ expertise in the field of debate and public speaking delivery, policy and research.

ESU trainers are educators, globally experienced debaters and leaders in a wide variety of professional fields.

The **Membership and Engagement Team** exists to:

- Develop long-term mutually supportive and beneficial relationships with stakeholders - particularly our members and alumni - be they clients (schools and teachers), volunteers, supporters, advocates, donors, the wider public
- Raise awareness of the benefits of the current work of the ESU and its national and international profile, particularly among educationalists, influencers and decision makers
- Raise long term sustainable voluntary, subscription, statutory and commercial income
- Build structure and relationships in which the ESU’s educational and charitable aspirations can be met
- To design and implement membership and volunteering journeys to improve supporter retention and improve efficiency.
- To design and deliver a membership strategy to ensure the recruitment of a diverse ESU membership who support the ESU’s charitable mission.
- To develop an events programme which will raise awareness of the ESUs work and attract new members and supporters.

**Job summary**
- To develop successful membership and branch relations for the ESU. This will be achieved through a personal and proactive approach that builds and strengthens life-long relationships between the ESU and its branches and members - maximising their interest, engagement.
- To ensure all ESU membership receive quick and helpful responses to enquiries and support with joining and renewals when needed.
- To help the ESU to re-engage with members who suspended their memberships during the pandemic.
- To ensure all members are onboarded and aware of the benefits of ESU membership and ways they can become involved to supporting the ESU’s mission.
- To run monthly subscription membership renewals.

**Responsibilities and Expectations**
- Maintaining the ESU’s membership records on the CRM system; ensuring records are accurate and monitoring the onboarding of memberships, membership renewals, credit and debit card payments and direct debit collections. Identifying and resolving any anomalies in the system.
- Maintaining records of international ESUs and managing their renewals.
- Proactively calling new or existing members to welcome them to the organisation, offer help and support in their renewal process.
- Responding to enquiries from prospective members, existing members, colleagues and the general public within agreed customer service timeframes.
- Contributing to the implementation of ESU’s Membership Strategy. Assisting with the development and implementation of marketing and promotional plans. Chasing lapsed members and supporting membership recruitment campaigns.
- Assembling and dispatching Welcome Packs to new members (merging, printing and fulfilment); ensuring these are dispatched in a timely manner.
- Participating in weekly meeting with the comms team to members to develop content.
- Meeting prospective Dartmouth House members, talking to them about the ESU’s work and giving them tours of the House.
- Supporting Alumni engagement strategy to promote membership to ESU members.
- Providing occasional cover of the ESU front desk.

**Skills and Experience**

**Essential**:

- An understanding of the nature and importance of the ESU’s charitable work within educational and wider contexts and a strong commitment to increasing the impact of the organisation’s work
- Highly organised, with an ability to ensure deadlines and targets are met
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to ensure a high level of accuracy when adding and amending database records
- A pro-active and positive attitude to problem resolution
- An ability to engage with multiple stakeholders at all levels
- IT literate with strong Microsoft Office skills, e
