- Job description- Principally your role will provide the hydrological data, information and support needed for the protection of life and property from floods, the management of water resources, and the protection of the environment. You will assist with monitoring, reporting, and analysing the state of the hydrological environment. You support environmental and flooding incidents with hydrological data and analysis. You will be working with the full range of hydrological conditions, covering both high and low flows. You will work with others to maintain and improve our hydrological data. You will use hydrometric databases, computer models, GIS and mapping tools.
This permanent role is largely office based with some opportunity for occasional field work as you develop your hydrological skills. You will be expected to attend the office in York to a regular work pattern although there will be some flexibility for home working. You may occasionally be expected to travel to our office in Leeds.
As responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The team provides hydrological data, advice and expertise for both Environment Agency and external customers. You will be one of six hydrologists in Yorkshire Area, directly supporting the Area Hydrologist in York. You will focus on the catchments of North & East Yorkshire but provide hydrological support for the whole of Yorkshire as required. Your technical development will be led by a Technical Specialist based in York.
- Experience/skills required- This development role enables a graduate or the equivalent in an appropriate science, who can form simple conceptual models of catchments, to develop hydrological skills and knowledge by a combination of workplace and formal training. You have used maths, statistics and graphics to describe patterns in numerical data. You can discuss scientific information clearly and with confidence. You have the customer skills that provide the right information in a timely manner. You use standard office software and may have used mapping software. You can negotiate deadlines, manage your workload, and seek advice from others.
We do not require previous technical expertise in hydrology as we provide the technical and career development training you will need for this role and your future career.
