Cumbria, United Kingdom Culham Centre for Fusion Energy Full time

**Overview of Responsibilities**:
**Who are we looking for?**
- This role will be at the forefront of combining a range of UKAEA expertise into a single point to allow high fidelity digital replicas of a range of UKAEA facilities to aid in using Computational Science and Engineering as the third mode of discovery after experiment and theory. The role is critical to the realisation of fusion energy, but will likely have impact on other related areas such as nuclear fission and accelerator systems.

**What will you be responsible for?**
- Expert / leader in engineering simulation at scale (complex, system of systems products e.g., fusion reactors or jet engines) with a broad knowledge of underpinning technologies, including data assimilation, computational steering, Digital Twin calibration, advanced visualisation, surrogate modelling/emulation for low order twins and UQ (Uncertainty Quantification) and scale out HPC solutions for High/Mixed Fidelity Digital Twins.
- Actively seek out new research and funding opportunities.
- Manage small to medium size teams of 4-10 people, working on 2-3 projects concurrently.
- Engage/collaborate with national and international partners, including sitting on working groups and expert groups.
- Build a team around one’s research area and nurture growth in capacity and capability.
- Contribute to two or three papers in refereed journals per year, ideally as lead author on at least one.
- Collaborate with national and international partners on developing and evolving codes to exploit peta
- and exa-scale systems.
- Plan and lead work in simulation and modelling necessary for developing Digital Twins of e.g., STEP, MAST-U, HIVE, CHIMERA etc.
- Lead the adoption of MBSE approaches and low order models as well as exascale targeted high fidelity simulation, connecting Digital Twins to state-of-the-art PLM systems and Digital Thread, plus other related technologies (e.g., metrology, 3D-scanning, Image Based Finite Element Modelling etc.) to ensure “as-built” Digital Twins are made possible.
- Develop relationships with commercial partners to nurture the exploitation of novel computing architectures for High Fidelity and efficient Digital Twinning.
- Develop collaborations or run contracts/procurements with pioneers in the scientific data visualisation space (e.g., Kitware, Nvidia, Intel + universities pushing the art of the possible to ensure Digital Twinning leadership, e.g., VR, AR, SR, in-situ methods etc. and for photorealism, working closely with the CD Visualisation team).
- Plan and build cloud-based systems and workflows allowing scalability outside the organisation in a mixed cloud environment for running Digital Twins at scale 24/7, supporting a vision to digitally twin “all” UKAEA experiments, test rigs and facilities in the ITER/STEP era.
- Work with partners to prioritise access to large scale computing infrastructures off-site, particularly in the UK via UKRI DRI and Future of Compute Review roadmap but potentially globally as well.
- Likely to be responsible for several budgets ranging from 50K to 250K or a single larger budget over 250K
- Salary
£63,856 (inclusive of MPP) + excellent benefits including outstanding pension- Programme

- A solid background in / understanding of Uncertainty Quantification and actionable data.
