**Job summary**:
The Ministry of Defence’s Directorate of Defence Communications (DDC) provides a world-class communication service, using diverse expertise and experience to help the public understand the role of the Armed Forces in modern society.

Working together with the Armed Forces, HMG and other Defence organisations, DDC showcases the best of UK Defence, from explaining the work of our Armed Forces deployed at home and around the world and celebrating the people who serve to Defence’s investment in Science, Technology and innovation.

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Senior Communications Officer in the External Campaigns Team of the Ministry of Defence. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to covering a loan linked to maternity leave. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 12 months after that date. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week

**Job description**:
As a key member of our Campaigns teams, you will lead the way in engaging the media and UK public in some of Defence’s most crucial and challenging conversations.

You will plan, design and deliver long-term campaigns that challenge the public’s assumptions on what it means to serve in the Armed Forces, with a key focus on skills, welfare, diversity and community.

This will encompass a range of skills, from placing features and interviews in national broadcast and print to establishing partnerships with external stakeholders, using insight to shape your content and digital storytelling through social media - including commissioning, storyboarding, and editing content for our various online channels.

Every day will bring new challenges. One week you could be arranging an influencer event for a movie premiere and showcasing the tools military personnel can use to improve their mental wellbeing. The next week might see you celebrating the achievements of polar explorers in the Army and commissioning graphics on improvements to women’s uniforms and equipment.

This is a demanding role requiring excellent communication skills. We want someone with a good grasp of the evolving media landscapes across both traditional and new media spheres, and experience delivering creative, integrated campaigns across owned and earned media channels.

You'll need to forge strong relationships with colleagues across Defence and Whitehall, working closely with Ministers, senior military personnel, Front Line Commands and Special Advisers.

**Person specification**:
Key responsibilities include:

- Lead the MOD’s “Women of Defence” Campaign.
- Develop and implement long-range, proactive, multichannel/multimedia communications campaigns with the UK public in mind.
- Provide direct, face-to-face handling advice on policy briefs to Defence Ministers, Chiefs of Staff, senior officials, the military, agencies and colleagues on sensitive, complex and often high-profile campaigns-related issues.
- Build strong relationships across MoD, the Services and with key stakeholders, including other Government Departments and No10. Proactively engage in cross-Government campaign planning efforts including No.10 meetings and the work of partner departmental campaigns teams.
- Build strong working relationships with broadcasters, production companies, social channels, journalists feature writers and wider stakeholders to maximise output and coverage.
- Monitor on-going campaign performance, working closely with the Evaluation and Insight team to ensure all campaign activity is thoroughly evaluated and learnings implemented.

More details on the role are available from the recruiting line manager.
