- The Smith Foundation is a registered charity that operates the outstanding William Henry Smith School and Specialist College and a children’s home, all for children and young adults experiencing social, emotional, and mental health challenges (SEMH).
The William Henry Smith School and Sixth Form is a non-maintained residential special school for boys aged 5-19. Our students have a breadth of special educational needs, including learning difficulty and disability. We are a not-for-profit charitable organisation providing ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ education, health, therapy, and care. The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. At William Henry Smith Specialist College, we support young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who have additional social, emotional and mental health needs, by preparing them for adult life and facilitating their transition into further education, training, or employment.
Opportunities for success are provided through a diverse programme of bespoke individual learning pathways and life skills across the 24-hour curriculum, which serve to develop resilience, skills and accreditation for life-long learning, happiness, and an improved quality of life. The school has a strong ethos and culture, built upon firm foundations that underpins all our work on improving quality of life outcomes for all our students and their families, through our strong focus on key working, developing relationships with students, and partnerships with parents and carers.
The William Henry Smith Specialist College provides much needed ‘specialised’ support to children and young adults who are struggling to flourish as a consequence of complex needs, and/or significant time out of any school or education provision. Our multidisciplinary, bespoke approach places students at the centre of everything we do. Our highly skilled and specialist teaching, support and therapeutic teams work with each young person to ensure their needs are fully met and that every achievement takes them closer to reaching their individual goals. We prepare our students for adult life, through person-centred academic and vocational study programmes leading to independent living with employment or further study. By working together, we increase resilience, confidence, self-esteem, emotional intelligence, and well-being: the cornerstones on which strong and successful long-term futures are built.
The school and college have a wealth and breadth of professionals which form an integrated team around students, including Creative Arts Psychotherapists, Speech and Language and Occupational- Be educated to level 4/5 or grade C and above or above in numeracy and literacy
