An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Dietitian to join our friendly Critical Care team at Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust, to cover the Royal site. As part of this new and exciting post you will work alongside our Critical Care team which consists of a full-time band 7 and part-time band 6 Dietitian covering a mixed surgical/medical Critical Care Unit. The new state-of-the-art Critical Care unit has 40 beds, providing care for some of the sickest patients in the region.

The post holder will be part of a wider surgical team comprised of Specialist Dietitians for Nutrition Support, HPB, Colorectal, and will provide support for surgical band 6 and band 5 rotational staff as needed.

Clinically the post holder will be responsible for covering a complex and busy in-patient caseload providing specialist nutrition support to critically ill patients and will be expected to attend regular MDT meetings, clinical governance meetings and ward rounds. The post holder will work closely with the nutrition support team for patients requiring bespoke TPN.

We are looking for a Dietitian with excellent communication skills, a practical, forward-thinking approach to service development and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Previous experience providing complex nutrition support in the acute setting is essential and previous experience working within ICU or High Dependency Unit is preferable.

Provide specialist support and advice to junior dietitians and other clinical staff within the Trust whilst maintaining a complex clinical caseload as an autonomous practitioner.

Work closely with the multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech & language therapists and clinical psychologist.

Use expert knowledge and extensive clinical experience to lead on the development and strategic planning of the dietetic critical care service.

Identify audits and service evaluation within critical care to drive clinical and service development strategies.

To be responsible for planning and delivering specialist training to junior dietitians, medical staff, nurses, students, and other health care professionals within critical care. In addition to supporting training for local Universities.

Contribute to the development of local policies, guidelines and resources.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Dietetic Department is a large team supported by a team of Dietetic Assistants. This includes Specialists in Surgery, Nephrology, Diabetes, Nutrition Support, Gastroenterology and Infectious diseases.

The department has a well-established Practice Supervision programme for new graduates and is also committed to training other Health Care Professionals and Student Dietitian’s (1,2, and 3 students)

Clinical
- Collect all relevant medical, social, biochemical and pharmacological information required to inform practice
- Undertake detailed nutritional assessment - using, weight, height, mid upper arm circumference and skin-fold measurements as appropriate.
- Undertake dietary assessment, estimating intake of macro and micronutrients as appropriate based on disease state.
- Using all information gathered, compile and agree with patient and/or carers a nutritional care plan. Inform all relevant health care professionals of main aims and objectives of care plan by completing relevant documentation or writing report in medical notes.
- Monitor progress on the nutritional care plan according to local standards, amending as necessary to ensure improvement in health is achieved, and informing other health care professionals of any changes.
- Establish and maintain effective communication when giving nutrition and dietetic advice to individuals and groups, ensuring technical information is given in a way that is understood.
- Communicate with patients and carers to explain principles of nutrition management and its effect on disease progression and outcomes.
