Clinical The post holder will be expected to participate as part of the epilepsy team using a person centred approach, access, plan, implement and evaluate care delivered. To provide quality care to children in partnership with families and carers as commissioned and described within the service specification. Assess the health and epilepsy care needs of children and young people within the individual care environment. To develop, implement and evaluate epilepsy care plans in partnership with the patient/young person families and carers whilst working in close co-operation with other disciplines.

To assist the training of less experienced registered staff, nursing auxiliaries, health care assistants and student nurses ensuring compliance to NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice. To provide, implement and regularly assess epilepsy training to identified staff in a variety of settings. To support and train parents/carers in the correct use of emergency epilepsy medications. Monitor the effects of prescribed medications, treatments and interventions.

Professional To act as a specialist support, educator and resource to all other relevant professionals, e.g. health, education, social care and voluntary agencies. To offer and provide relevant training and support and advice to teaching welfare and social services staff in relation to children and young peoples individual needs. To support the Specialist Epilepsy Nurse and Professional Champion in the development of the team and build on the existing service to meet the changing needs of children/young people with complex health care needs.

To work with the Epilepsy Team and Professional Champion to develop evidence based practice by utilising research and auditing clinical effectiveness for the children in the community. To contribute to the development of guidelines, protocols and care pathways for the management of children with epilepsy. Ensure that all practice is in accordance with the most recent NMC Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics: Standards for Medicines, Management and Standards of Record Keeping. To comply with all policies, procedures, clinical protocols, standards and guild lines based on legislation, evidence based nursing practice and NMC guidelines for conduct and professional practice.

Ensure accurate record keeping as per Trust policy and NMC Guidelines. Adhere to the Medicines Management Code and NMC Standards for the safe keeping and administration of medicine. Contribute to the accuracy of statistical returns. Maintain awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing and participate in nursing research to enhance patient care.

To actively participate in the Trust Management, clinical supervision and safeguarding supervision. Attend staff meetings, training sessions and courses required. Provide support, guidance and supervision to other staff as required.
