Cambridge, United Kingdom Wellcome Sanger Institute Full time

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

**About the Role**:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF), who is passionate about understanding the role of microbiomes in health and disease, bacterial genomics, evolutionary process and excited about the goals of our institute, to be based in the research group under the leadership of Professor Nick Thomson at the Wellcome Sanger Institute for 3 years fixed term.

**About Us**:
You will join a dynamic and collaborative multi-disciplinary team with expertise in using genomic approaches to study the basic science relating to the evolution and spread of bacterial pathogens in both humans and the broader environment.

We are seeking a talented, motivated scientist with a keen interest in understanding the role of human and environmental microbiomes in changing exposure and susceptibility to disease linked to a changing climate. The focus will be bacterial enteric pathogens and through our partners in lower/middle-income countries (LMICs), you will have unparalleled access to structured samples and metadata to address fundamental questions around disease susceptibility and transmission and the interaction of pathogenic bacteria with environmental and human microbiomes.

The team has specialist interest and expertise in the evolution and spread of diarrhoeal and tropical diseases (studying pathogen[s], their host[s] and the role of the microbiota in disease). The team has a broad range of lab and informatic experience and works collaboratively to analyse complex datasets. We have a history of developing novel computational and lab-based approaches for accessing genomic and transcriptomic data.

**About You**:
You will be part of a vibrant international Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) community at the Sanger Institute with a wide programme of transferable skills training and excellent career development opportunities. For more information about being a Postdoctoral Fellow - please visit here. You will be expected to seek appropriate training, including taking an active part in any training programmes organised for postdoctoral fellows.

- The ability to analyse and interpret genomic data with strong quantitative/computational skills.
- Proven track record of data analysis and publishing papers
- Wet lab experience (DNA /RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR...)

**Competencies and Behaviours**:

- Detail-oriented and highly organised; dedicated towards meticulous record-keeping
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and organise and prioritise own workload
- Proven ability to interact professionally and productively with other members of a team

**Other Information**:
