Forestry England has worked hard over the past two years to map its carbon footprint and agree its organisational boundary and is now keen to develop and implement a sustainability strategy to meet its ambitious goal of net zero by 2030.

This will involve building on existing programmes of work including GHG measuring and reporting, resource management, and energy strategies. The role will also be required to join the narrative between other ongoing programmes of work that encompass sustainability including nature recovery, climate change adaption and natural capital accounting, making sure that interrelations are captured, consistent and united.

The Head of Sustainability will be responsible for the development of the net zero & sustainability strategy. You will develop the net zero and sustainability implementation plan and be responsible for delivery of associated targets, reporting to the Executive Team and Board.

This will involve building on existing programmes of work including GHG measuring and reporting, resource management, and energy strategies. The role will also be required to join the narrative between other ongoing programmes of work that encompass sustainability.

Working with Forestry England’s property management teams, the post will be responsible for embedding principles of sustainability and energy management, ensuring compliance with legislation whilst monitoring and managing performance against central government and internal targets.

**Job description**:

- Be responsible for Forestry England’s sustainability strategy. Work will include an initial focus on environmental sustainability and specifically establishing a strategic plan for the programme of work required to deliver net zero and waste management targets.
- Be accountable for championing and embedding sustainability across the organisation. Set out a roadmap and milestones for emissions reductions, developing actions with department managers and establish governance structure to ensure actions are delivered and reported on.
- Manage calculating carbon savings or implications of specific projects or programmes of work ensuring carbon appraisals are factored into decision making.
- As the head of the sustainability function, you will be a point of expertise for Energy and Sustainability management within the organisation and will manage the sustainability team, currently comprised of 3 roles.
- Be the primary representative for the Forestry England sustainability programme, building close relationships with the wider FC / DEFRA sustainability programme teams as well as senior external stakeholders.

This role can be based at any main Forestry England office and will require regular travel to the National Office in Bristol, Defra in London as well as across England. The post holder must hold a valid driving license or propose some other acceptable arrangement which will allow them to travel on official business to locations where public transport options may be very limited.

**Person specification**:

- Extensive professional experience leading the management of sustainability in the private or public sector; understanding of ISO 14001 and experience of the management of an EMS and undertaking audits.
- Full Membership of a recognised environmental management related professional body, such as IEMAor Energy Institute or similar.
- Track record of successfully developing and measuring the metrics surrounding sustainability, including reporting. Experience of strategy development including the processes, tools and culture to deliver policy.
- Significant knowledge of environmental sustainability including carbon accounting.
