At the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) our mission is to provide health security for the nation by protecting the population from infectious disease and external hazards. We are a trusted source of advice to government and to the public, focusing on reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

The Blood Safety, Hepatitis, STI and HIV (BSHSH) Division is the national centre for surveillance of hepatitis, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England. It is within the Public Health Programmes (PHP) Directorate of the Clinical and Public Health (CPH) Group and is based mainly in Colindale, north London.

The Senior Statistician post is based within the Blood Safety, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and HIV (BSHSH) Division and will contribute to priorities identified through business as usual and as part of UKHSA incident response, as well as collaborating with other internal and external partners. This will include evaluations, epidemiological science projects and research activities. The post holder will lead on the statistical aspects of the design, management, and analysis of data.. The post holder will be expected to write analysis plans, perform complex analyses in packages such as R or Stata, and write reports for UKHSA groups, cross-Government committees and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals. They will work with mínimal supervision. They will also be expected to present findings at national and international conferences and meetings.
- UKHSA offers hybrid working or home working for its employees - this means that whilst the role will be based in Colindale, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy. Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. _Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available._

**Job description**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

- Writing statistical analysis plans, extracting, and organising data, and devising, using programmes to perform more complex analyses.
- To write clear and concise reports for key deliverables.
- To present findings to internal and external audiences.
- To supervise non-statisticians on data analysis as required and contribute to teaching and training as required for the Division.
- To contribute to the development and implementation of statistical and computing facilities relevant to the work of the Division and the project through developing and writing statistical tools and programs.
- To develop expertise in statistical methodologies relevant to the Division, project and to research relevant non-statistical areas such as laboratory methods, immunology, and epidemiology.
- To maintain an awareness of new methodological developments relevant to the Division.
- To provide statistical reviews for scientific and medical journals as agreed with the line manager.

**Person specification**:
**Essential**
- Either a PhD with substantial statistical/mathematical content or a postgraduate qualification with substantial statistical/mathematical content along with a strong research track record
- Significant experience in statistical modelling and in epidemiological analysis
- Demonstrated experience of coordinating projects in complex and challenging environments.
- Demonstrated experience of programming using STATA and/or R.
- Ability to prepare and produce concise yet insightful communications for dissemination to senior stakeholders and a broad range of stakeholders.
- Able to communicate highly complex ideas and methods clearly and succinctly to a non-technical audience
- Able to collaborate across scientific disciplines, and to identify, formulate and solve problems.
