Overview:
As a CGL Harm Reduction Peer you will support the St Helens IRC to deliver
interventions that reduce harm from using substances. This will be achieved through
providing advice and guidance, delivering overdose prevention training, Naloxone
kits, providing clean needle exchange equipment and testing for blood borne
viruses.
The role is part of a wider engagement team working within the St Helens CGL
Service supporting peers and communities, in understanding and reducing the risks
and associated harms with substance misuse.
**Responsibilities**:
- Provide a friendly, non-judgemental, and confidential service to people accessing support.
- Provide signposting on how to access local treatment and harm reduction services, including location of needle exchange facilities (CGL and pharmacy/agency based) and other local treatment/support services.
- Attend regular support meetings with nominated CGL lead/s and meetings with peer groups.
- To follow the recommended procedures for training, accessing, transporting, storing, and returning naloxone supplies to your service.
- To record all naloxone issued in the receipt book.
- Understand the causes & signs of overdose and share this information to people who use substances
- To provide advice and guidance on safer injecting techniques and harm reduction advice
- To provide clean injecting equipment to peers and record confidentially as required.
- To support the safe and appropriate disposal of used injecting equipment, and with supporting the service to reduce drug litter in the community.
- To provide advice and guidance on blood borne viruses, including HIV and Hepatitis
- To provide testing for blood borne viruses where appropriate or support people to access testing services
- To support people to access Hepatitis treatment where appropriate
- To work alongside the service to understand the risks of new and emerging substances and to share information about any risks identified, including drug alerts.
