**ROLE DEFINITION**: Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by GPs Simple wound care Removal of sutures New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis Phlebotomy / INRstar Administering immunisations under PSDs Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician Assist nurses with chronic disease management Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records Assessing problems presented opportunistically by patients, dealing with minor illness. Able to recognise and manage anaphylaxis according to UK guidelines Clean up of any bodily fluid accidents identified in the surgery, using appropriate PPE. Clinical waste and sharps disposal Check/monitor/record fridge temperatures Process and record patient specimens Ability to obtain and document informed consent (either verbal or written) Maintaining all clinical rooms, stocking and rotating items as required Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical rooms Maintain stock of waiting room leaflets as instructed by partners and practice manager Participation in administrative systems in the practice A duty to advise practice manager/GPs of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks Attend and participate in any practice meetings when required.

Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post. Demand management: Influence patients to recognise the difference between their needs and their wants, and manage their expectations of what we can realistically deliver in a manner that is fair and proportionate for all care priorities. Manage self and others: Participate in an annual individual performance review, taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and professional development. Manage own time, workload and resources effectively.

Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance. Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision. Undertake professional development as required by the role. Participate positively and actively in clinical and practice meetings.

**Manage and use information**: Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk. Make effective use of the clinical system by ensuring consistent and accurate data entry and use of Read Codes. Facilitate the use of up to date information technology in order to collate accurate and timely information as and when required by the Practice. Assist in the development of practice protocols for the surgery and clinical protocols for the clinical team.

Identify, monitor and review deficiencies in procedure and implement remedial action. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately. In the performance of the duties outlined in this job description, the role holder will have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers.

They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential. Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers, or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data. HEALTH AND SAFETY The role holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health and Safety Policy.

Use personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines. Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake such activities in a way that manages the risks. Make effective use of training to update knowledge and skills. Use appropriate infection control procedures, maintain work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards.
