We are seeking a specialist dietitian to be part of the Tier 3 Specialist Weight Management Service, within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our forward-thinking service is psychologically led and informed, in an interesting and rapidly developing clinical area. Committed to compassionate and respectful care for people living with Obesity, we understand the complexity of obesity and work with the wider health community to promote more informed thinking about weight. This is an exciting opportunity for a dietitian to support the assessment and treatment of individuals referred to the service. The role is varied, often working alongside physical and mental health conditions to support individuals with weight management. The role includes individual assessment and treatment appointments, co-facilitating weight management groups and supporting individuals towards bariatric surgery.

After an initial training and induction period some aspects of the role have the potential to be delivered remotely, including home working. The post also offers active involvement in service evaluation, audit and outcomes, supported by band 7 dietitians and a lead dietitian. This is a part time post 0.6 WTE (22.5 hours) with the possibility of additional overtime or fixed term hours available.

To work autonomously providing expert dietary advice within the Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS) for a defined clinical caseload of patients, with a range of clinical conditions and needs, associated with obesity.

To undertake the nutritional assessment of patients in the service including those individuals considering bariatric surgery.

To use advanced communication and behaviour change skills to support patients to manage their weight more effectively longer term, both on an individual and in a group setting

To support patients who wish to proceed to bariatric surgery

To support the patient with their own medical condition(s), either by referral to another specialist team or by providing patient-specific information directly

To ensure the patient meets their nutritional requirements, regardless of the treatment pathway followed in SWMS

To communicate highly complex information in a manner that is culturally sensitive and takes into account communication difficulties, language barriers, cognitive and physical abilities.

To use and interpret biochemistry, anthropometry and other physical parameters, liaising with the endocrinologist linked to SWMS and/or the patient’s GP as appropriate

To provide specialist dietetic expertise for non-dietitians within the SWMS team and for other health care professionals as require

The post holder willwork as an autonomous practitioner to provide specialist dietetic assessment and treatment to adults with morbid obesity in the context of the SWMS multi-disciplinary team in both our group and individual treatment programmes.

The post will require an experienced dietitian who is able to provide tailored support in assessment and treatment alongside a wide range of core dietetic skills. Skills include liaison and communication with a wide range of healthcare professionals and patients. Experience of weight management work and behavioural change approaches is desirable but not essential as full training and induction will be provided. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential as are enthusiasm and commitment to this clinical area. CPD is considered a high priority and flexible working is encouraged.
