We have an exciting opportunity to work within our dementia team. This role is the first of its kind for the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and we are looking for an individual, who is creative, compassionate and dedicated provided patient-centred care.

The activity coordinator will lead on developing an activity programme, facilitating groups and individual activities to support patients in their goals and enhance patient care. The post holder will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, liaising closely with nursing and therapy staff to design person centred activities contributing positively to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of patient.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

**Clinical**:
To plan and deliver a range of individual and group activities for the within the ward setting that engages service users in purposeful occupation.

Demonstrates a knowledge and awareness of current clinical issues affecting clients working under the supervision of an occupational therapist, which may act as a barrier to the patient engaging in activities.

Plans and facilitates a range of sensory, cognitive, physical and social activities for clients with a variety of needs, some of which may be complex in nature - under the supervision of an occupational therapist.

To engage patients and their carers in activities and encourage them in a compassionate manner, to support them in engaging in meaningful and purposeful activity, to promote independence and well-being through a client-centred approach.

Co-faciliates groups with occupational therapy staff.

Provides information and practical advice, within scope of own competency to patients and carers, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Provides verbal and written feedback to relevant multi disciplinary team members following activities.

Assist patients in maintaining their personal hygiene, grooming and dressing needs with specific concern for their religious, cultural and personal preference, ensuring privacy and dignity at all times.

Communication / Relationship Skills

To be able to establish effective therapeutic engagement and relationships with patients and their family members.

To protect and maintain confidentiality of information concerning patients, visitors and staff at all times.

Communicate using appropriate verbal and non-verbal methods.

Understand that patients may demonstrate behaviours that challenge, due to experiencing a delirium. The postholder will be required to have the skills to de-escalate aggression and to reassure frightened patients.

Document the outcome of patient interventions on the electronic records system CWP.

Co-operate and communicate clearly and professionally with the designated nurse in charge any changes that may affect patient care.

Act in a professional manner at all times when interacting with patients, relatives, colleges, other service users and visitors.

To communicate concerns to the MDT to plan care.

To feedback on patient’s ability to join in with activities and techniques developed to settle the patient to support discharge planning.

Effectively communicate any situations or potential situations affecting the health and safety of staff, patients and visitors to the designated nurse in charge.

Report any untoward incidents or events either verbally or in writing, using the Trust electronic incident reporting system.

Planning and Organisational Skills

Work on own initiative making assessment of workload and adjustments to daily routine as required.

Assist patients in all activities in daily living when required.

Identifies and takes actions when own or other behaviours undermines equality and diversity.
