Wild Planet Trust is a registered education, scientific and conservation charity established in 1957 and based in Devon, UK. We own two zoos in south west England, plus two local nature reserves and a National Nature Reserve. We support conservation in the United Kingdom and overseas using funds generated by the people who visit the zoos and the expertise and dedication of our staff.
Paignton Zoo first opened its doors as the Torbay Zoological Gardens in 1923. Almost 100 years later, our site, and work, has grown considerably and we are now one of the South West’s largest conservation organisations and top visitor attractions. There are over 230 species of animal that call Paignton Zoo home. As well as being a zoo, we’re also a botanical garden with over 4,000 species on record.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Ecological Monitoring Assistant to join our Projects and Partnerships team on a fixed term contract until the end of October 2023. This is a part time role working 22.5 hours over 3 days, working hours will vary over a 7 day rota, including weekends. The salary for this position is £12,437.10 per annum.
**What will this role involve?**
You will be coordinating the Save Our Seagrass project as set out by the project plan, which will include the monitoring of seagrass beds by local volunteers in Torbay, providing an opportunity for learning and exploration of seagrass habitats and associated fauna through a structured biological recording programme. This will involve assisting on seagrass surveys in a non-diving capacity by managing equipment and ensuring volunteers are familiar with the survey protocals. Data analysis and report writing for project evaluation and funder requirements will also be part of the role.
You will also contribute to a long-term management strategy for seagrass in Torbay by improving scientific understanding of anthropogenic and environmental factors influencing the habitat. The role will contribute to ecological monitoring activities in WPT nature reserves and zoo sites alongside assisting with stakeholder engagement and targeted engagement activities with the local community, including participation in the Torbay Marine Forum.
You will assist in the training of staff and volunteers in ecological survey methods and provide support for species identification (particularly marine) as well as communicating to volunteers, general public, marine users and zoo visitors, including delivery of talks and events.
**What skills and experience are required?**
We are looking for someone who has demonstrable enthusiasm and ability for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues as well as good marine species identification skills, data handling and analysis for quantitative biological data and familiarity with Excel and statistical software e.g. R.
Good time management and organisational skills are essential. It would be advantageous to have a driving licence. Experience of coordinating volunteer activities and working in a conservation environment are desirable as would be basic plant and invertebrate identification skills and a dive qualification.
