Learning Disability Modern Matron

Sheffield, United Kingdom Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Are you looking for a new challenge in your career? Are you an outstanding, committed and motivated Learning Disability Nurse?

A unique opening has arisen to join the Learning Disabilities Service within SHSC Trust. The Modern Matron will be a key member of the Clinical Management Team, providing nursing leadership across the service.

In this role your expertise will be the driving force for change to ensure high quality of care and delivery of health and well-being outcomes for adults with learning disabilities and their families. We provide specialist high-quality, integrated community, mental health, and learning disability services across Sheffield and are looking for someone who really shares our values, and is committed to helping improve the lives of the people we support.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the nursing team as the service embarks on a programme of transformational change, working with multiple outside agencies to improve the service we offer for specialist healthcare and support for adults with a learning disability, and their families. This includes people with a diagnosed learning disability who may also have other complex needs, eg. autism.

If you are driven by a passion to make a positive difference - we want to hear from you.

You will be a key member of the Clinical Management Team, working under the General Manager and the professional direction of the Head of Nursing. The Modern Matron will be responsible for the implementation of National and the corresponding local Nursing Strategy. Specifically, this means delivering the complex agenda as defined by the Matrons Charter, the NHS Institutes' "High Impact Actions" and other National and Local guidance and policies. You will be expected to adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for service users, leading by example in empowering and developing staff to undertake a greater range of clinical activities to modernise and improve service user care.

The Modern Matron will be accountable for developing a culture of clinical improvement, leading by example and empowering nurses to improve the care and well being of service users in their clinical area. This means being known and visible to staff, visiting teams regularly and being familiar with the service users, their needs and the challenges faced by staff.

The Modern Matron holds accountability for Trust-Wide nursing initiatives, such as Infection Control, Physical Health and Workforce health and safety. The Trust views the Modern Matron as a clinical leader who exercises great influence over junior staff and has the attributes to promote a culture which nurtures practice excellence and development for all those in nursing related roles.

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust provides specialist inpatient and community learning disability services consisting of a range of health professionals and we are committed to recruiting people who fit our organisational values.

The clinical model we provide is a stepped care model approach and the service consists of a Community Learning Disability Team, Community Intensive Support Service and an Assessment and Treatment Unit (inpatient ward). The Community Learning Disability Team provide specialist health assessments, diagnosis, support and care for adults aged 18 years and above. Ensuring person centred care is underpinned by the Positive Behaviour Support approach.

The Community Intensive Support Service provides intensive support to service users that may be struggling with mental health problems and/or have behaviours that are high risk and difficult to manage. They work closely with the Assessment and treatment Service, which provides inpatient accommodation and support for adults with a learning disability whose behaviour is of concern or complex.

The learning Disability Service consists of a highly specialist team including nursing, specialist nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, psychiatry and a referral team. As the Modern Matron you will deliver the complex agenda as defined by the Matron's Charter, the NHS Institute's High Impact Actions.

**The Matron's Handbook (2021) defines these areas as**:
