Technical Supervisor

**Job Purpose**
To manage core operational services and processes in the Scottish Centre for Production Animal & Food Safety (SCPAHFS). The postholder will be responsible for the day-to-day operational processes and activities at the farm animal facility and will play a key role in ensuring that the facility runs effectively, efficiently and safely.
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
**Operations**:
1. Responsible for the day-to-day facilities and operational management within the Scottish Centre for Production Animal & Food Safety (SCPAHFS) facilities, designing and developing work systems and processes to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery.
2. Line management responsibility for technicians & stockpersons, including staff training, day to day activity planning, overseeing activity, planning rotas and performance development and review. Backfilling for stockpersons when required.
3. Source and maintain appropriate stock levels for all clinical, teaching and research activities of the SCPAHFS. This includes pharmaceuticals, consumables, PPE, animal feeding and animal bedding. Ensure safe storage and monitoring of dangerous items such as controlled drugs and flammable chemicals.
4. Source, manage and maintain all technical equipment used by SCPAHFS e.g. ultrasound scanners, vehicles, washing machine and calving simulator. Identify faults and repair equipment when required or else source suitable repair resources.
5. Collect and input clinical case data into the practice management software and case recording database. Analyse and provide outputs from these systems as requested.
6. Ensure the SCPAHFS activities are in line with legislation with items such as animal transport, identification, movements, and welfare. Actively engage with training in these areas.
7. Process, catalogue, and manage biological samples generated from the SCPAHFS. This includes maintaining frozen and refrigerated samples to allow retrospective analysis and research to be carried out and monitoring and reviewing temperatures of fridges and freezers.
8. Co-ordinating ambulatory vehicle services and transporting vehicles to/from garage
9. Responsible for the safe use and daily routine maintenance checks of the teaching vehicles (i.e. coolant, lubricants, tyres, lights, completion of vehicle log sheets etc.).
**Health & Safety**:
10. To advise on and maintain H&S, ensuring routine H&S tasks, checks and reviews are carried out in accordance with procedures.
11. Take on the role of health and safety co-ordinator and first aider for SCPAHFS.
12. To act as a point of contact for H&S enquiries, reviews and induction training and carry out risk assessments as required, including the coordination of visitors to ensure they receive a proper induction regarding health and safety.
13. Ensure that activities of the SCPAHFS are carried out safely. Monitoring and managing activities and carrying out regular risk assessment review, identifying actions required. Identify new hazards and create new risk assessments. This includes communicating and implementing health and safety measures to staff and students.
14. Review existing Standard Operational Procedures (SOP’s) and develop/implement new SOP’s to ensure the safe and efficient running of SCPAHFS.
15. To provide regular operational Quality Control auditing and make Quality Control proposals, implementing changes and circulating, monitoring and updating SOPs.
16. To provide a point of contact for various professional and regulatory inspections.
**Teaching**:
17. Provide in-depth technical support to academic and students within the SCPAHFS.
18. Plan, co-ordinate and implement practical classes for the BVMS and BSc Vet Bioscience courses as required. This includes timetabling staff, ensuring live and cadaver animal resources (adhering to animal welfare guidelines), preparing registers, sourcing, and setting up of equipment.
19. Deliver teaching and assessment of clinical skills (i.e. lambing/ sheep/cattle handling and calving.
20. In all the above tasks, carry out duties with mínimal input from other staff members. Respond to ad hoc request from staff and students on a daily basis but also monitor all areas of SCPAHFS regularly, identifying and solving potential issues before they become a problem and being accountable for their own work.

A1 SCQF level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, HND) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
Or: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
A2 Knowledge of farming systems, in particular animal husbandry/management systems, in the UK and/or of production animal veterinary practice.
