Consultant in Care of The Elderly
We wish to appoint a new consultant colleague to join our expanding Care of the Elderly (COTE) service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT), we are looking for subspecialty interests in orthogeriatric medicine, perioperative medicine, interface and community geriatrics.
**Core to this post is**:
- the early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of the frail elderly presenting as emergencies to our acute hospitals;
- the development and support of the Frailty Assessment Service and our Frailty Unit; and,
- a desire to increase the provision of general elderly care medicine within our trust and across the county of Gloucestershire.
However, individual job plans represent different jigsaw pieces that make up the complete picture of our service. Thus there are many, flexible opportunities for our consultants’ development through our annual job planning process. Interests of our current team include: falls, syncope, orthogeriatrics, surgical liaison, movement disorders, frailty liaison, community geriatrics and dementia. We also have the flexibility to embrace new (and as yet undeveloped) areas of interest.
These posts include partaking in the fixed weekend COTE post take ward round and Frailty Assessment Service (FAS) sessions at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on a 1 in 10 basis (but no on-call).
As a senior employee of our Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support not just other clinical professionals but also our managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to our patients. Integral to the responsibilities of our posts are the following objectives:
- to ensure the delivery of a high quality patient-centred clinical service
- to provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in that same task
- to sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- to work in accordance with our trust’s procedures and operating policies
- to support the business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division and our Trust
- to work within the framework of team decisions
- to take a whole systems approach to working with the wider health community both NHS and social services
- to show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust (GHNHSFT) was formed in April 2002 and became a second wave Foundation Trust in July 2004. We are a large organisation providing acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. In collaboration with the other NHS Trust in Gloucestershire (GHC - who provide physical health, mental health and learning disability services), we provide COTE services across our County of 1,220 square miles. Our population is c. 640,000 with an annual year on year growth rate of 0.8%. Within our population 21% are over the age of 65 and the number aged 65 and over will rise by two-thirds between now and 2030. Approximately half our population live in the City of Gloucester and the Spa Town of Cheltenham and around half live in the Forest of Dean and across the Severn Vale and the Cotswolds Hills. Our effective catchment population is higher than our county’s population as our Trust receives secondary care referrals from Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.
Our workforce is almost 8,000 strong. Our caring and dedicated staff are recognised as providing outstanding patient-centred, high quality emergency, elective and specialist care across a range of clinical areas.
We expect the post-holder to develop and lead a robust service in order to provide high quality care to patients in a timely manner:
- to be responsible for patients seen by the FAS service on a rota basis
- to be responsible for medical input to general elderly medicine inpatients on one of our COTE wards
- to be responsible for providing advice and input to elderly medicine patients referred from other medical or surgical specialties

- to provide weekend post take and FAS ward rounds for COTE Medicine at GRH on a 1 in 10fixed session rota (no on-call)
- to conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of our Division’s and Trust’s agreed objectives
