Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist, Tower Hamlets Autism Service (THAS), 0.6 WTE, 1 year Maternity cover

**The main purpose of the role is to**:

- As part of the multidisciplinary team, to screen and assess for autism spectrum conditions in adults (without a learning disability)
- To plan, organise and facilitate post diagnostic support, individual and group interventions, including Speech and Language Therapy, to those diagnosed by the service
- To provide specialist advice, training, consultation and liaison to support other ELFT staff, social care staff, Primary Care Colleagues and staff in third sector organisations working with autistic adults.

**Tower Hamlets Autism Service (THAS)**:
The Tower Hamlets Autism Service (THAS) is a specialist diagnostic and brief intervention service. Designed in accordance with NICE guidelines, we operate an open referral system, accepting referrals from any source when it is thought that an adult living in Tower Hamlets may have an autistic spectrum condition. We use screening tools and specialist assessments (ADOS-2) alongside clinical experience and expertise to diagnose autism spectrum condition in adults.

The service is a multidisciplinary team comprising of speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work, clinical psychology, psychiatry, administration and support work practitioners. The service aims to develop the provision and accessibility of support in Tower Hamlets in order to make it an autism friendly borough.

After diagnosis, we provide up to 12 sessions of autism specific interventions, for example post-diagnostic support, social skills and communication programs, and initial treatment for co-morbid mental health disorders. Through a local third sector partner (The Tower Project) support and advice around employment is also available. In the future, we hope to provide a service for individuals with an existing diagnosis during periods of significant life transition.
