The Information Rights Unit are the MPS experts with regard to the Data Protection Act (DPA), the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and related Information Sharing matters.

The role of the Triage Officer extends well beyond those duties and you will become an expert in identifying and responding to requests made under both pieces of legislation. Your role will include reviewing incoming requests against our checklists and making decisions in respect of whether requests are valid.

As Triage Officer you will also be responsible for dealing with cases that fall within the lowest complexity category.

This is an excellent role for anyone that wants to move into Information Law as it provides the role holder with a strong foundation knowledge of both the legislation and of the workings of the Information Rights Unit and the wider Data Office.

Key Responsibilities:

- Receiving requests and enquires from the public via our busy mailbox or through the post. Making sure posted correspondence is digitalised so that it can be recorded on our system and processed remotely if necessary. Responding to enquiries with the correct standard reply and taking part in more ad-hoc enquiries with support from your line manager
- Logging requests on our CycFreedom system and checking appropriate payment has been made for chargeable services. Checking the system for duplicates before creating a new case on the system while always ensuring that the information entered is correct and free from any errors/typing mistakes.
- Reviewing each request against the relevant checklist. Making decisions on what actions are required for each specific request for example, deciding whether the request is valid, deciding whether key stakeholders need to be informed and searching for information that had been previously disclosed or it is otherwise in the public domain.
- Case management for low complexity requests. Cases that you have identified as "quick wins" are to be completed within the team. This means that for certain offence types you will be required to access the crime report, consider what information within the crime report is suitable to be released and digitally redact (remove by covering with black marker) information that is not suitable for disclosure. Typically new starters will have each case checked for the first 6 months after which staff are usually able to make disclosure decisions autonomously.
- Dispatch service - as part of the support to the Data Office the team provide a dispatch service where material is printed out and posted to members of the public. This work is assigned to you on rotation and must be completed within the Sidcup hub. It remains vitally important of course that the correct information is posted to the correct location and that our CycFreedom system is updated with the relevant tracking numbers.

Essential Criteria:

- A basic understanding of the Data Protection Act 2018
- A basic understanding of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
- A basic understanding of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI)
- A willingness to expand your knowledge of the above areas and other associated Acts as well as MPS and National policing policies.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- The ability to carry our fast paced work
- The ability to make and evidence decisions within the frame work provided
