We research, assemble and incubate the ideas, expertise and energy that are needed for policy impact. The centre prides itself on the intersectional and systemic nature of its research. Much of the work undertaken within the centre seeks to emphasise the linkages and cross-dependencies between climate change, the consumption of natural resources, and how these are configured, distributed and adapted by societies all around the world.

As a central member of the Environment and Society Centre, your role will be focused on strategy, operation and financial management across a diverse portfolio of activities and projects, whilst collaborating closely with Chatham House's central finance, communication and research partnership teams.

You will be part of the Centre's executive team, helping to guide staff as they undertake research activities, event coordination, finance and more. You will contribute to our overall strategy and individual projects. You'll be someone that builds trust easily, as well as a problem solver who can manage a diverse set of priorities.

**Key Responsibilities**

Reporting to the Centre Director, the Assistant Director will:
**Delivery**
- Manage Centre activities to ensure objectives, outputs, evaluation requirements and timelines are met, and their impact is reported;
- Support the team to deliver activities within given project or activity budgets, in close coordination with researchers;
- Supervise, sign off and prepare timely and accurate reports to donors;
- Collaborate with our communications department to develop and maintain effective communications and research dissemination systems and be responsible for the coordination of cross Research Centre events and marketing;
- Ensure Centre’s process and projects are in compliance with Chatham House organisational procedures; and establish policies that promote the Centre’s culture and vision;
- Work collaboratively, influence and network with people working in a range of sectors including external agencies, government, academia and NGOs;
- Represent the Centre in external and internal meetings and act as rapporteur for events as the need arises;
**Budget Management**
- Have overall responsibility for developing multi-year programme finance forecasts and programme budgets;
- Prepare and revise budgets for new projects; oversee project budget control; support coordination staff with effective bookkeeping of expenditures, tracking of budgets, accounting records, corporate supporter contributions and invoicing;
- Handle the negotiation, management and development of contracts and reporting with funders, consultants and consortium partners;
- Handle compliance with audits process, prepare reports for auditors and for Chatham House finance procedures;
**People**
- Work alongside the Chair and HR to create Centre and Programme structure, people development plans and succession plans;
- Lead and coordinate the hiring of all new team members working alongside HR.
- Line manage project management team to ensure efficient and accurate general administration and provide leadership and development;
- Monitor staff workload across the Centre and take active measures to ensure capacity issues are resolved;
- Assess employee satisfaction and, using evidence, identify areas that require improvement;
- Providing guidance to the executive leadership team on professional development for Centre staff, promoting a training and development agenda; identifying areas that need attention and improvement;
- Support managers on appointment processes, performance management issues, employee health matters, structural issues and supporting them through any processes which may be applicable;
**Strategy**
- Work with the Chair to develop the Centre’s strategy and it’s fit with Chatham House’s overall strategy;
- Support the Centre Director and the wider team in identifying, planning and developing projects and workstreams;
- Review and evaluate our team's operational practices and procedures, and lead on the agreed implementation of new processes;
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with colleagues, funders and partners to meet our goals;
- Collaborate with other programmes at Chatham House to build efficiencies and resilience;
- Develop the Centre’s profile and media relations.
