Industrial Placement

Harwell, United Kingdom MIRICO Ltd Full time

**About the role**

We are offering placements for 9-12 months, ideally starting July 2023.

The Digital team at Mirico develops the software needed to install, operate and manage our innovative sensor platform. This includes embedded code on the devices themselves, data & analytics platforms running in the cloud, and physics models that are effectively digital twins of the way gas behaves in the real world.

Your role will be to work alongside established analytics & software personnel, helping them implement solutions that turn sensor data into valuable insights such as detection, location and classification of gas leaks from energy infrastructure (e.g. energy production units) and distributed facilities (e.g. landfills). This is an important capability that extracts the maximum value from our technology.

Key responsibilities include:

- Developing inversion models (e.g. using Bayesian & Monte Carlo techniques) to estimate real world causes of sensor outcomes
- Collaborating with teams in universities and other research organisations to identify new or improved modelling approaches
- Implementing models using tools (e.g. Matlab) that allow rapid iteration and testing
- Testing models using data sets gathered during field trials to validate their performance
- Working with the software engineering team to help them implement new models within cloud based data ingestion and insight platforms

**About you**

You will be a student looking to participate in a Year in Industry placement as part of your degree course. Ideally, you will have completed 3 years of the course and looking to return to university for your final year after the placement.

Primarily, we are interested in the knowledge and skills you have gained in your degree. However, it would be great if you also have experience (for example through university projects, personal study or work placements) where you have applied physics modelling to solve real problems.

**What you need for the role**
- Studying for an appropriate technical degree
- Predicted grade of 2:1 or higher
- Specialism or particular interest in physics modelling
- Knowledge of Matlab (and potentially other tools and languages, such as Python)
- Understanding of machine learning techniques
- Problem-solving and critical thinking ability
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient using Microsoft Office

In addition, it would be desirable if you had:

- Knowledge of environmental or atmospheric science
- Knowledge of statistical methods (esp. Bayesian methods)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Azure

**What we offer**

At Mirico, we offer a salary of £21,000 plus range of additional benefits including:

- 25 days annual leave (pro rata as appropriate)
- The potential for full-time employment with us when you finish your degree
- A great team ethos and a purpose-driven company
- An attractive campus-based working environment**About the role**
