- Job description- We have a vacancy for an experienced full time Grade 4 fisheries enforcement officer to join us in Yorkshire Area. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to work in a role protecting the natural environment through tackling illegal and unlicensed fishing.
As a Fisheries Enforcement Officer, you will hold an authorization under the Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 (SAFFA) and be empowered as a Constable to investigate fisheries offences.
Mostly field-based, you will undertake regular fisheries enforcement patrols with colleagues, police and other enforcement partners, using your initiative to target, disrupt and take action against fisheries crime. You will be required to work unsocial hours, attend incidents at very short notice and work weekends when required. Fisheries Enforcement Officers need to be flexible, and able to plan, adapt and respond where pressures demand. You should be comfortable using computer based systems and be competent keeping accurate records and inputting / retrieving data.
As responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The successful applicant will travel and work across our Yorkshire Area with a particular focus on the East Coast of Yorkshire.
The role requires participation in out-of-hours incident roles, with periods of unsociable working, including night-time and weekends. A shift allowance applies to this role.
- The team- Situated within our Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology Team, you'll work closely with and in support of other Fisheries Enforcement Officers within the Team both technically and operationally in rod license checking and High Impact Fisheries Enforcement (HIFE). Also enforcing legislation relating to fish movements and alien fish species. Where appropriate you’ll attend incidents use your excellent communication skills to promote our work and deal with hostile situations.
- Experience/skills required- We are looking for an experienced fisheries enforcement officer who has knowledge of and recent experience of salmonid fisheries enforcement work as this as this is a big part of our enforcement activity.
You will have:

- A current SAFFA warrant
- Sound Knowledge of fisheries related legislation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills
- A proven ability to complete tasks accurately and with minimum supervision, either working individually or as part of a team
- A full UK driving license (manual vehicle license)
- Ability to swim
- A good level of fitness is required to maintain an authorisation for this role, and annual training requires an appropriate medical
