Based in the Science Division of the HSE at our science and research centre in Buxton, Derbyshire, this vacancy is for scientist in the field of ergonomics/human factors to join our Human Factors team in the Risk and Human Factors Group. You will help maintain our role as a leading provider of health and safety solutions to industry and government, nationally and internationally.

We use applied science to underpin and inform pragmatic guidance and advice to meet the current and future needs of industry. The scope of our work requires a diverse range of expertise.

This breadth of expertise underpins our particular strength in creating multidisciplinary teams to support major incident investigations and policy development, as well as undertaking research and providing consultancy support.

You will be part of a team of Ergonomics, Human Factors and Psychology specialists and your work will require collaboration with a range of other technical discipline specialists, as well as Policy and Regulatory colleagues.

**Job description**:
Following a period of supported on-boarding your role will involve:

- Supporting technical contributions to incident investigations as required (following a period of training and support), working with other agencies such as the police and attending the incident site if appropriate. This may involve potentially presenting expert evidence in court.
- Providing expert advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders on key industrial human factors issues including:
human factors in design;
managing human performance through identifying / managing potential performance influencing factors;
understanding of human errors and how to mitigate their occurrence or effects;
management of fatigue and shift work;
staffing levels and workload (including effects of automation);
safety critical communications;
- Writing clear, high quality, accurate reports that are suitable to be made available to the public, used by policy colleagues, shared with industry or used as evidence if required.
- Actively supporting the development of research and consultancy work with industry by engaging with potential customers, providing quality technical content to proposals and presenting technical solutions to both technical and non-technical staff and customers.
- Supporting and quickly leading the delivery training courses in your areas of technical expertise or supporting the delivery of other courses to the public and private organisations.

Some overnight travelling is expected but you will be mostly based in HSE’s Science and Research Centre in Buxton. We encourage and enable hybrid working with regular (weekly) attendance at our purpose-built centre in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 22hrs Per week

**Person specification**:

- Developing skills and competence in human factors related research methods, including practical experience of site assessments and investigations.
- Experience of designing, planning and delivering high quality projects safely and to time and cost.
- The ability to respond to calls to support site visits at short notice across the UK.
- The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
