An exciting full time opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated dietitian to join our multi disciplinary AHP team delivering specialist intervention to people with problems resulting from either their complex cancer diagnosis, treatment or specialist palliative care needs. As the lead dietitian for the team you will manage and shape the nutrition treatment pathways for this client group. The post is based at Wigan & Leigh Hospice and the caseload covers in-patients at the Hospice, out-patients and community patients. There is significant liaison with colleagues across Greater Manchester. You will be joining a well established and respected multi-disciplinary team who are very supportive.
This post involves working in the community and hospice setting.
An Enhanced DBS with Adults' Barred List checks will be obtained during pre-employment checks.
This post involves contact with patients and families face to face within a community setting. Therefore it cannot be ruled out that the postholder may come in to contact with people who have COVID-19, although the Trust provides PPE and takes all reasonable steps to minimise risk.
- To plan and deliver a highly specialist client centered dietetic service to Complex cancer & Specialist Palliative care patients within Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHSFT. This will include the assessment, treatment support and education to patients and their carers with a wide range of complex needs.
- To act as an expert clinician in managing a caseload of patients with highly complex cancer/palliative dietetic needs. Using evidence based client centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- To undertake and evaluate clinical audit and research activities and in-service training within specialist area.
- To implement professional skills and standards consistent with specialist working within cancer and palliative care, ensuring that services provided comply with national standards and guidelines.
- To act as an expert resource in the area of dietetics to professionals across organisational boundaries.
- To act as an active member of the Macmillan AHP team developing strong links with the local hospitals, hospice, community, tertiary and voluntary organisations.

Responsibilities for patient care
- To be recognised as a highly specialist dietitian in the field of cancer and palliative care
- To assess nutritional status taking into account anthropometric data, clinical conditions/treatment, in-depth biochemical data and social/cultural factors
- To manage a clinical caseload of patients with complex and highly complex cancer/palliative care needs - monitoring, evaluating and reviewing dietetic treatment interventions, and to modify as necessary
- To work with patients, carers and other relevant professionals to identify dietetic treatment goals as part of the overall care plan, using a range of specialist dietetic standardised and non-standardised assessments
- To use in-depth clinical reasoning, and hold a comprehensive understanding of caner and palliative conditions and wide-ranging knowledge of treatment options to plan and implement individual care plans
- To interpret and analyse relevant clinical and non-clinical facts to formulate accurate intervention
- To utilise examination and assessment findings to develop and implement highly specialist programmes of treatment, underpinned by evidence-based practice. To be able to relate assessment results to the presenting disease/pathology/impairment
- To contribute to multi-professional patient goal setting as part of the Macmillan AHP Team
- To facilitate and support clients decisions making in relation to current and anticipated need, ensuring that they are cared for in their preferred place up to the point of death/discharge
- To monitor and evaluate episodes of care to facilitate achievement of goals against outcomes
- To promote health and well-being and raise awareness of risk factors related to cancer
- To produce, disseminate and update reports/guidelines regarding individual care plans to cares/patients and other professionals including those in the Macmillan team
- To use comprehensive knowledge of other multi-disciplinary roles and external agencies to ensure best referral management and achieve the highest standard of care
- To develop, promote and maintain pract
