Collections & House Officer

Bury St Edmunds, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

As Collections and House Officer, you'll join a skilled and passionate team at an exciting time, as we develop our offer as one of the National Trust's 28 Treasure Houses.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 6 months.

What it's like to work here:Reporting to the Property Curator, you will join an experienced, warm, and friendly Collections team, supporting the Senior Collections and House officer, Senior Volunteering and Community officer and Collections Officers.

The team at this Georgian Italianate gallery house are in the process of putting together a masterplan which will bring significant changes to the property. Our work balances caring for the precious interiors and objects, whilst ensuring that the 80,000+ visitors we welcome through the doors annually can access and engage with Ickworth and its fascinating stories.

Ickworth is one of the most unusual places in England, epitomising the character and vision of its creator, Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry. With a passion for Italy and a desire to emulate the quality, beauty and magnificence of classical and contemporary Europe, Frederick's plans for the property were progressive. A remarkable patron of the arts, years of frenzied yet discerning collecting and patronisation of artists, would be for his gallery at Ickworth. This was to be a place of inspiration, enlightenment and learning for others, through access to the greatest masters such as Dürer, Titian or Kauffman. It was, and continues to be, as much a museum as a mansion.

What you'll be doing:No two days at Ickworth are the same, with tasks ranging from preparing the house for opening, to supporting our vast team of volunteers, to liaising with the fire services to coordinate emergency exercises. You'll get hands-on with a large and varied collection, expanding your conservation knowledge as well as your leadership skills and learning what is involved in the operational management of a large mansion. We would love to hear from you if you are a team player with a good foundation of conservation best practice and strong communication skills.

Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you, if you:

- Have knowledge of customer care and approaches to optimising visitor enjoyment.
- Are a good team player with day to day line management and supervisory skills.
- Have good interpersonal skills enabling relationships to be maintained.
- Have some knowledge and experience of managing costs and expenditure.
- Are willing to contribute original or imaginative ways to make elements of the collection or house that are difficult to reach accessible to all visitors.
