3. As directed, to be responsible for the production of rotas for the 24/7 provision of ATO reception cover, ensuring that all rotas are filled at all times.

1. The post holder will work together with senior staff and support staff in all sections of the Combined Laboratory to produce a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.

2. The post holder will support the timely processing of patient samples, typically 7500 a day, serving all those patients attending UHP, PCTs representing 100 General Practices and specialist assays referred to us from other Trusts within the Peninsula. The department performs 4.7 million tests annually and employs 123 wte.

The Combined Laboratory is located on levels 6 and 7 in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. We are a large Department employing over 150 members of staff comprising medical, scientific, ancillary and clerical grades. The Combined Laboratory provides a full range of Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Coagulation, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Stem Cell bank and Blood Transfusion. The Department also offers a comprehensive range of tests through a Point of Care Testing service.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

1. Working with other senior staff ensure the reception area is organised and staffed appropriately to deliver timely processing of samples and test requests.
2. Assist in the maintenance of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for all activities within the sample processing area.
3. Will be responsible for the production of rotas that provide adequate staffing levels in the 24/7 sessions where reception support for BMS (Biomedical Scientists) is required. This will include the EWD (Extended Working Day), weekends and bank holidays.
4. Will assist in the monitoring of invoices related to samples sent to referral centres.
5. Will chase and input the results of send away tests from the referral centres.
6. Will assist in the training of Reception staff and ensuring that their training logs are reviewed on a regular basis.
7. Will appraise ATO and NVQ staff as directed by the reception manager.
8. Assist in the receipt, processing and storage of all samples derived from clinical trials including those for which the department derives income.
9. Remove samples and request forms from their plastic bags whilst checking the data on the sample matches that on the request form.
10. Following SOPs record and inform requestors of rejected samples.
11. Prepare these samples for analysis including attaching bar code labels, centrifugation, separation and prepare aliquots as required.
12. Book test requests into the computer system (ISOFT iLAB).
13. To be responsible for the safe disposal of used specimens and waste products and the daily cleaning of laboratory work surfaces.
14. Assist in performing print runs of reports and their sorting for distribution as necessary.
15. To ensure adequate stocks are maintained for the issuing of consumables to service users as requested e.g. 24hr urine collection bottles.
16. Competent in the use of office equipment including computers, printers, and photocopiers.
18. To observe all departmental, Trust, national and European Health & Safety regulations relevant to the service, ensuring attendance at the annual departmental H&S update. In addition all staff must sign the departmental H&S policy to acknowledge understanding and compliance.
19. To continually update your knowledge and skills whilst documenting this in your Continual Professional Development folder.
20. To ensure contemporaneous completion of your induction and training records.
21. To follow Standard Operating Procedures at all times.
22. To attend meetings and training courses as necessary.
23. To attend Statutory and Essential Update Training annually.
24. To attend departmental briefings and/or acquaint yourself with the team brief posted on the departmental notice boards.
25. To assist in the maintenance and compilation of workload statistics.
26. To participate in an annual IPR and achieve any targets set at this time.
27. Participate in the 24/7 rotas for ATO and support staff
28. Whilst participating in this rota identify, prepare by uncapping and loading onto analysers several hundred samples. Unload, rerun if required, recap, rack away for storage in a refrigerator or cold room.
29. Ensure that samples received match work lists, the patient ID is correct before testing and there is sufficient sample to perform the assay.
