**Job summary**:
The Chemicals, Pesticides and Hazardous Waste (CPHW) Division in Environmental Quality is a large multi-disciplinary team, dedicated to delivering policies and regulations which ensure the effective management of chemicals and pesticides throughout their lifecycle, for everyone, the environment and the economy.

The Strategic Engagement Team leads on stakeholder messaging, engagement and briefing across CPHW. We support our policy and evidence colleagues to develop and deliver effective policy, and to communicate this to our stakeholders - whether that’s the public, chemicals and pesticide users, manufacturers or civil society.

We work closely with a number of stakeholders to achieve our goals, including Other Government Departments, Government Agencies, Regulators, academia and international organisations. This role would primarily be focusing on supporting the delivery of pesticides policy.

**Job description**:
We are looking for an enthusiastic SEO to join our busy team, who will be confident in taking a leading role to deliver effective engagement with a broad range of stakeholders.

This will be an important year for both the chemicals and pesticides teams, as we look to move forward with publication of a new chemicals strategy and national action plan for the sustainable use of pesticides. Following publication, we will want to work with our stakeholders to ensure that the policies are communicated and delivered effectively.

Your work will be primarily focused on supporting the pesticides team, but you may also be asked to support broader cross-division work.

**Person specification The role requires you to be**:

- Capable of planning and delivering stakeholder engagements, including meetings, roundtables and events
- A strategic thinker, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach to stakeholder engagement, working in close partnership with policy colleagues within Defra and in other Government Departments
- Confident in your drafting and briefing, leading on the delivery of briefing packs, ministerial correspondence and PQs, often with short turn-arounds
- Conscientious, with good attention to detail - to ensure that our external communication is accurate, targeted and informative, while providing our colleagues with effective and valuable insight into public and stakeholder sentiment
- Someone who values the importance of relationship building and who is confident delivering complex and sometimes contentious policy messaging to (a) public audiences, and (b) Defra policy colleagues wishing to grow stakeholder buy-in
