The University of Manchester Library benefits from the work of a highly skilled team of photographers who undertake imaging and advanced imaging of our Special Collections materials in support of research, teaching and learning and social responsibility. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced photographer with proven heritage sector experience to a senior role within the team.

Working closely with the Imaging Manager, the Senior Photographer will be responsible for creating high-quality images of the world-renowned Special Collections held at The John Rylands Research Institute and Library and University Library to support academic research, teaching and learning and public engagement with the collections.

As well as standard digitisation of heritage material, the Senior Photographer will be responsible for the implementation of advanced imaging methods such as MSI, Photogrammetry and RTI to facilitate research, learning and public engagement.

The Senior Photographer will be responsible for managing imaging projects, liaising with colleagues within the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, wider University, and occasionally externally.

The role will require the Senior Photographer to line manage project photographers and to supervise student interns, volunteers and others engaged in imaging projects. This can mean working alongside colleagues at different sites around the University of Manchester.

You must be a creative problem-solver, with a keen eye for detail. You will be able to use your own initiative and work well as part of a team, and you have a high standard of technical skill and willingness to learn and seek new knowledge.

The Library's Special Collections are among the richest holdings of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual collections in the world and are an outstanding resource, spread across three sites: The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Centre, the University’s Main Library and The John Rylands Library. Through the John Rylands Research Institute, we deliver an extensive programme of research on the collections, in collaboration with academic colleagues at the University.
