Due to growth, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Social Work Assistant to join our award winning therapeutic fostering agency in South East Wales. Aspiring social workers are welcome to apply.

Safer is particularly interested to hear from those with experience of working with Children's Social Services either directly or through another organisation.

Only applicants already resident in South Wales will be considered. Ideally you will be located within a half hour drive of Cardiff as travel will normally range between Newport and Bridgend along the M4 corridor as well as the Welsh Valleys. A confident, competent driver with their own reliable vehicle is essential.

**Job purpose and Key Responsibilities**:

- Play an active role supporting the therapeutic approach for children within their foster families.
- This work can take many forms but will involve direct working with young people.
- Provide sessions s require in the home or community, this can be jointly with foster parents.
- Advocate for children and young people, representing them whenever children request them to do so, and accompanying them to a range of meetings.
- Seek, and document child’s views, wishes and feelings at every opportunity.
- Provide support and escort services for children and young people, including supervising contact with family members and significant others.
- Support children’s relationships with people who are important to them outside the foster home.
- Plan and carry out specific themes for direct work, including life story work, emotional narrative and behaviour management.
- Respond to crisis and areas of particular difficulties within foster families. The support they offer will support placement stability.
- Develop a longstanding relationship with foster children and their foster families.
- Ensure the child has access to and understands their rights whist they are in fostering families.
- Contribute too and provide reports for the child’s review, PEP review, Foster parents annual review and other meetings as required.
- Assisting the children to produce their contributions to the above meetings and events
- Attending with or on behalf of or supporting a child to attend any of the above meetings.
- Work closely with the child’s social worker, the foster parents’ therapeutic supervising social worker and at times the Empathic Listener

- Assisting the agency’s social workers in the execution of their duties, including deputising at meetings, providing reports and chasing up essential documentation.
- Providing a breathing space (brain break) for the foster parents, thus helping to avoid compassion fatigue.
- Working with the birth and adopted children of foster parents who are still at home to gather their opinions for reviews, support them to understand behaviours of traumatised children and voice any concerns
- Create, organise and undertake children’s participation exercises and social activities, some for the children and others for the whole families.
- Accurately record their work on the company’s systems in a timely manner. (Intuitive Care database - training given)
- Report any safeguarding concerns to the named persons in the policy and procedures without delay
- Undertake comprehensive training in Therapeutic Parenting, leading to an accredited qualification.
- Attend training regularly as identified in supervision
- Attend regular monthly supervision
- Attend team meetings and therapeutic development groups
- Attend staff reflective practice groups

**Essential Skills and Abilities**
- Must have a full valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle as driving is an essential part of this role
- Be willing and able to work mainly outside of school hours, including evenings and weekends
- Communicate with children of all ages and of all abilities
- Communicate verbally with professionals and other adults
- Ability to provide written reports for various purposes when required
- Attend meetings and contribute as required to discussions and decision making
- Computer skills which will enable the worker to access and update relevant files within the agency’s systems

**Highly Desirable Experience**
- Work experience within or Children’s Social Services or with a body who provides services for Social Services.
- Prior experience as a support worker for children.
- Previous work experience with foster children.

**Salary**: £27,000.00 per year
