This is a great opportunity to join Suffolk County Council's Behaviour Change Team as a **Cycling Instructor and Walk Leader** on our Active Travel Social Prescribing Pilot (ATSPP). You’ll be working mainly with communities in Ipswich or Lowestoft, with the occasional opportunity to travel more widely in Suffolk.

**Your role**

Social prescribing looks to support individuals to take greater control of their health in a non-medical way, bringing benefits both to the individual and to the wider society. This project specifically looks to support people to become more active, particularly those who are currently inactive or starting from a very low level.

It is a very rewarding role, with our trainers having the opportunity to encourage learners to be fit, healthy, and environmentally friendly whilst carrying out an enjoyable activity. You will be working with adults with a variety of moderate physical and/or mental health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, loneliness, etc.

You will be trained to the national standard to become a Bikeability Instructor, on a four-day course funded by Suffolk County Council. You will then be required to complete ongoing training, to achieve your accreditation as a qualified Bikeability Instructor within 6 months of the course. There will be ongoing professional development to maintain the qualification.

In this role, you will be required to adhere to road safety laws as you do in your daily life. You should be able to plan and organise courses and be able to demonstrate reliability and efficient timekeeping. You will be based in either Ipswich or Lowestoft, although travel throughout Suffolk (for which mileage expenses may be claimed in line with Suffolk County Council’s policy) may occasionally be required and you must be prepared to work in all weather conditions.

**Your responsibilities**

You will be working as a professional **Cycling Instructor and Walk Leader**, delivering Bikeability cycle training to groups of up to 12 people with a fellow instructor or providing guided walks with another leader. You will be travelling to a variety of locations across Ipswich or Lowestoft.
- working with adults (and occasionally children) in a formal setting
- liaising with managers and fellow instructors, ensuring you keep to course dates and times
- maintaining accurate records such as risk assessments and registers
- ensuring you are proactive and always demonstrate reliability and professionalism.

Your role will support cyclists and walkers as they travel in an active and sustainable way. It supports Suffolk County Council’s casualty reduction activities, as well as supporting healthier lifestyles, reducing the environmental impact of traffic, and developing skills for life.

**You will need**:

- to be a regular, competent cyclist
- good communication skills
- experience working with people in a small group setting
- experience of cycling on the highway.

**Travelling requirements for your role**
- **Vocational Driving Essential (vehicle not provided) - **Due to the nature of this role, you will require a driving licence and access to personal transport.
