**Purpose of the Job**:
To provide a high standard of care to blind and vision impaired children in a proficient and sensitive manner that will enhance their academic and social development.

NCW provides specialist education for 11-19 year-old students, who are blind or vision impaired, with onsite residential student accommodation. The Residential Care Deputy role at NCW works closely with the Residential Care Lead, to oversee one of our houses at the College ensuring, through supervision and co-working, that staff work effectively to support children to access opportunities and achieve their potential. The role includes day-to-day direct work with children and sleep-in responsibilities.

**Please Note**
- **Main Tasks**:

- To deputise for the Residential Care Lead in their absence (for two days per week).
- To supervise the work of the Assistant House Parents.
- To attend staff meetings, student reviews and other meetings as requested.
- To attend regular supervision sessions and an annual appraisal by the Residential Care Lead.
- To provide opportunities for students to develop socially into mature and confident young people.
- To liaise with parents, academic staff, agencies and other professionals in order to achieve a comprehensive approach to individual student development.
- To support students coming to terms with the effect of visual and other impairments.
- To assist in developing comprehensive care programmes appropriate to the age and understanding of individual students. Each programme will address living skills with the aim of the students becoming competent at carrying them out independently. This will involve, amongst others, skills
- training in personal hygiene; nutrition and self-catering; general skills required in managing money; and personal safety.
- To provide access to and experience of a range of leisure pursuits in liaison with relevant staff.
- To ensure that records are kept in accordance with school requirements and current legislation.
- To maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to students, staff and the College.
- To administer medication and minor medical procedures to students who require it. Training on the handling and administration of medication will be provided. Specific training for other medical procedures will be provided as necessary.
