We are looking for an enthusiastic ST3 level trainee interested in Neurology to augment our clinical and research teams. You will gain clinical neurology experience on the ward and out patients and carry out crucial roles in clinical and data driven research.

Clinically, our team of 25 consultant neurologists cover a population of over three million people, through Southampton Hospital and our surrounding District General Hospitals (DGHs) and our neurology trainees are an integral part of the team. We provide a regional tertiary referral service including: a thrombectomy service for our stroke patients; a neuromuscular service including patients with myasthenia utilising an innovative plasma exchange service, an atypical Parkinson syndrome service seeing patients with progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy and corticobasal syndrome in a specialist multidisciplinary setting and a busy neuroinflammatory service. In our clinical service, Wessex trainees generally rotate through different roles within the service to give each trainee exposure to a range of clinical experiences and patient presentations.

In terms of research, University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is consistently one of the top 5 trusts in the country for recruitment to weighted Clinical Research Network (CRN) research and have recruited over 200,000 patients to over 3,700 CRN approved studies. We have £27 million of NIHR infrastructure dedicated to bringing the latest treatments to patients, including one of 23 NIHR funded Clinical Research Facilities (CRF) and one of only 20 Biomedical research centres in the country. Our strong links to the University of Southampton have fostered collaborations such as the Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre. We have state of the art imaging, with 3 Tesla MRI; high performance super computing; wet labs with biochemical, molecular and histochemical capability; image-processing workstations and training and are investing in our research leaders programme.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Clinical research - being a sub-investigator for phase 1 -4 drug trials
- Academic trials looking at care for people with neurodegenerative disease
- Wessex research fellow training programme
- Inpatient work (neurology, stroke and acute liaison neurology)
- Neurology outpatient clinics: general neurology, sub-specialty and TIA
- Participation in audit and educational meetings within the department

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary - MT04 £51,017 Basic Salary - MT05 £58,398

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
- Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
- Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
- A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
