Gateshead Council is a visionary and ambitious Local Authority. We are an active partner in the development of the Durham Biodiversity Action Plan and the protection and enhancement of the Natural Environment forms a fundamental part of the Councils Thrive Agenda.

The job requires and enthusiastic and knowledgeable person who can support the development management process, whilst providing key ecological support and advice in relation to the management of Council assets, maintenance programmes, infrastructure projects and development proposals. You will also be required to prepare biodiversity and nature conservation policies, strategies and funding bids.

You must be Technically competent in all aspects of ecology and the natural environment, including all relevant legislation. Have an understanding of the planning system including planning policy and guidance, development management work and survey standards and possess a strong customer focus.

An appropriate environmental degree or equivalent and a protected species survey licence for bats and great crested newts is essential. As is a full UK driving licence.

This is reflected in the fact that Gateshead has over 150 designated Local Wildlife Sites, as well as, 8 SSSI which between them cover more than 15% of the borough.

In your role you will provide expert advice and technical support to a wide range of Council services; and have input into the management of Council assets, infrastructure projects, development proposals, policy writing and plan making and the development and delivery of green/blue infrastructure projects and habitats and species recovery work.

You will act as a strong advocate for biodiversity and nature conservation both within the Council and when dealing with external partners, customers and the public.

You must be technically competent in all aspects of ecology and the natural environment, including all relevant legislation. An understanding of the planning system including planning policy and guidance, development management work and survey standards is desirable.

An appropriate environmental degree or equivalent and protected species survey licences for bats and great crested newts is essential.

The post is offered on a full time basis but flexible working arrangements can be discussed. Hybrid working is offered but site visits in the borough will be required and a presence in the office is expected upto two days per week.
