Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in Experimental Crystallisation / Isolation / Solvent Recovery working on the project ‘Computer aided solvent design to minimise solvent use in integrated synthesis, purification & isolation for sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing, SolvIT’ funded by EPSRC. The project is led by Prof Chris Price in collaboration with Prof Sefcik and Dr Li in the department of Chemical Engineering, Prof Kerr and Dr Lindsay in Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde and with Prof Adjiman, Prof Galindo and Prof Jackson at Imperial College London. The post will commence in May 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

It may be surprising to learn, but the pharmaceutical industry is around 1000 times worse than oil refining in terms of waste generated per kg of product; the industry produces around 100kg of hazardous waste per kg of product, most of which is solvent. The research program builds on existing collaborations between Strathclyde and Imperial College in the area of modelling and solvent design to tackle this colossal amount of waste. Our vision is to improve efficiency and reduce waste in the manufacture of new and existing medicines, lowering their cost, and making their production more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

In this project the Research Associate will lead experimental activities to demonstrate successful solvent recovery and reuse in drug substance synthesis and isolation (crystallization, filtration, washing and drying). This will involve demonstrating that the use of the recovered solvent has no adverse impact on the quality of the isolated active pharmaceutical ingredient in terms of both purity and physical properties such as crystal size distribution and crystal habit. There will be opportunities to work in partnership with the wider project team and with the industry partner Eli Lilly. The research will take place in Strathclyde University’s flagship building, the Technology and Innovation Centre which hosts CMAC the Centre for Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallization where the laboratory work will take place. These state-of-the-art laboratories combined with the collegiate environment of CMAC and the Department of Chemical Engineering make this an engaging place to work.

This challenging project will bring the Research Associate excellent research experience across crystallization and isolation processes, leading to the development of strategies which when implemented will deliver significant impact in the sustainability of pharmaceutical manufacturing. You will also contribute to the supervision of a PhD student associated with the project, drafting research publications, presenting at conferences, and development of further proposals, student projects and collaborations. There will also be opportunity to gain teaching experience, to benefit from the University’s extensive career development provision, and to take part in the Department’s extensive outreach activities as part of the ReallySmallScience public engagement team.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or another relevant engineering/science field. You will have a strong background in one or more of crystallisation, isolation, pharmaceutical R&D or manufacturing. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences. You will have the ability to work independently toward clear research goals while collaborating successfully with colleagues.
