Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

The Sheffield School of Architecture is making a strong commitment to strengthening its research profile, leadership, and learning and teaching through investment in key areas addressing environmental and social sustainability challenges, specifically those faced by the cities of the future.

As part of this investment we are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant who will be joining Dr Xiang Ren’s team for the research project (Decoding Dong Minority Heritage as Risk), which addresses on endangered built, cultural and climatic heritage issues in south-western ethnic-minority areas of China.

As a future member of one of the School’s research groups (Space, Cultures and Politics) and research unit East-West Studies in Architecture and Landscape you will be collaborating with Dr Xiang Ren and other colleagues in the group to develop the international research standing of the School. This will include making presentations to the group, the School and beyond and other dissemination activities, as well as generating significant research impact through your work. A willingness to engage in knowledge exchange with non-academic organisations to develop research and impact is also a priority.

You will possess a Master’s degree, or equivalent relevant experience, ideally in a relevant built environment or discipline, such as geography, landscape, rural or urban studies and have an interest in interdisciplinary research that addresses heritage issues. We are particularly interested in applicants who have experience of exploring the boundaries of architectural knowledges, the futures of architectural and indigenous heritage, the new methods of documentation and interpretation of built, cultural and climatic heritage, and responses to the urgent risks including climate crisis that will help bring about a sustainable heritage future.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
