Glasgow, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) Graduate Apprenticeship - 2023 Campaign

Location: Glasgow area

The starting salary is £20,696.

Are you trying to decide between university and an apprenticeship? You know that getting a degree will be important if you want to become a Chartered Surveyor down the line. But you’re also keen to earn some money and gain practical experience.

A Graduate Apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds. Meaningful paid work experience, on-the-job training, alongside part time study at a top university.

Join us as a Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) Graduate Apprentice, and in 4 years' time you’ll be graduating debt-free with a BSc (Hons) from Glasgow Caledonian University with 4 years of work experience under your belt.

It’s an incredible way to start your career.

What you’ll do

Working with the guidance of our Commercial Managers you’ll learn how to manage all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects from the initial calculations to the final accounts.

Over time you’ll develop technical, legal, analytical and evaluation skills in contractual frameworks, costing a project and enhancing value for money, while still achieving the required client expectations, standards, and quality.

Nothing is more important to us than safety - so expect to be working in a safety-first environment to make sure that you, your colleagues and the public all go home safely every day.

What you’ll bring

Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) is a challenging specialism, and you’ll be studying at undergraduate level. So, it’s important that you meet Glasgow Caledonian’s entry requirements:
- A minimum of four Highers. With at least two Highers at grade B or higher.-
- Various grade combinations from Highers and Advanced Highers will be considered.-
- Nat 5 English and Mathematics are essential at; Higher English and Mathematics are preferred. We will also accept relevant Foundation Apprenticeships which will treated as equivalent to one SQA Higher at Band B.

You will need to be fully committed to gaining your degree. Some of your learning will happen on campus. Some of it will happen at work. Both are equally important.

But it’s not all about qualifications. It’s also about mindset. While your full time student friends might occasionally decide to have a lie in and skip an early morning lecture after a night out, that won’t be an option for you. You’re more likely to be kitting up in high-vis to visit a construction site or attending a meeting with a partner firm at our Head Office.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

Our normal working hours are 9-5pm, Monday to Friday - but you may need to work outside of those hours sometimes depending on the project you’re working on. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

You’ll be offered a 4-year fixed term contract for the length of your degree programme. After successful completion of the programme, you’ll be offered a permanent Construction and Built role within the Commercial team

The starting salary is £20,696. Plus, you’ll receive an £800 increase in your pay every six months (And two even bigger increases in your final year). Plus we’ll cover all the university fees.

You won’t be in the office every day. We work very flexibly, either from home and from other sites across Scotland.
- Please note that you must able to organise your own travel between university and your base work location as required.
