The purpose of Corporate Relations is to ensure that Anglo American stands out as a trusted leader in responsible mining that unlocks long-term value for society by effectively managing socio-political risk; engaging proactively and meaningfully with all relevant stakeholders to shape both their opinions and public policy outcomes; rallying employees around the company’s ambitions to help build a high performance culture; and protecting and strengthening its global reputation and brand.
**Job Description**:
- This role will support the Head of GIR - UK, Africa, Middle East to strengthen Anglo American's strategic position and reputation in those regions to support business continuity, investment and growth optionality.
In pursuit of this purpose, this role will focus on the functional oversight and analysis of political and policy developments in the UK,, including advocacy on agreed topics of commercial and reputational benefit, development of strategic partnerships and positive relationships with British government officials, ministers, politicians and political parties, think tanks and civil society.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Support implementation of advocacy strategies for agreed topics of commercial and reputational benefit for deployment in countries of responsibility, including supporting the implementation of advocacy relating to crop nutrients and hydrogen based on (and in support) of the Crop Nutrients and PGMs businesses’ advocacy strategies
- Support implementation for Board and ELT engagements with government and multilaterals in regions of responsibility
- Advise Legal & Corporate Affairs Director, the Group Head of Corporate Affairs and other senior leaders on interdependencies of complex, multi-stranded international issues and their impact on Anglo American’s business
- Manage the 6 annual meetings of the UK Government Relations Committee engaging with the various relevant functions eg Tax, Legal, People and Organisation
- Manage our input into the UK government Chevening Scholarship scheme liaising with key university MA courses such as Oxford Blavatnik, LSE, UCL and Exeter/Camborne School of Mines
- Engage with the UK-based wings of international bodies such as the UN Global Compact, ICC and IFC, manage our relationship with Chatham House
- Represent Anglo American as a senior ambassador at external events and international multi-stakeholder meetings
**Qualifications**:
- Graduate Degree. (Post Graduate Qualification preferred)
Technical Knowledge:
- Policy processes in governments, how regulations and legislation is formed in different jurisdictions, and how the socio-political agenda influences these processes
- International policy agenda, in particular as it affects countries of responsibility
- Government relations in the corporate sector or in associated public affairs function
- Significant experience in the international relations space (in government and multinational organisations)
- Understanding of governance requirements of a major listed company
Technical Skills
- Extensive external stakeholder network
- Experience of navigating multiple legislative landscape
- Policy-level understanding of climate change and the energy transition
- Strong ability to synthesise the impact of evolving policy and regulatory trends on a business environment.
- Establish detailed processes and policies for issue and crisis management
- Strategic approach to campaigning on issues
- Project management skills
