**Job Purpose**

As a member of the Wales Research and Diagnostic PET Imaging Centre, you will have leadership qualities that will influence the direction of the Centre and will nurture the talent and build the expertise in others. You will act as the Medical Physics Expert for the facility and cover all aspects of radiopharmaceutical production, clinical scanning and pre-clinical scanning. You will also work closely with PETIC’s Radioactive Waste Advisor and Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor.
- You will bring the technical expertise to develop and implement research of an international standard and work with internal and external collaborators. You will produce written research work for publication in high quality, key journals and give presentations at conferences and seminars in a way that enhances the international standing of the Centre.
- Working together with the Director of PETIC, Departmental Managers and QA, with the support of the team of GMP Production Technologists, the post holder will be responsible for actioning and overseeing radiation safety within the facility.
- The postholder will be required to take the lead for delivering defined projects, ensuring these are delivered on time and with mínimal impact on manufacturing schedules. Further, they will be responsible for ensuring that all corresponding documentation is completed in accordance with PETIC’s Quality System, including authoring/updating standard operating procedures for GMP equipment and systems.
- **Duties and Responsibilities**

**Clinical**
- To lead on the provision of professional advice and guidance on Medical Physics processes and procedures for the PET services under IR(ME)R 2000, advising on the impact of Medical Physics on strategic developments and plans.
- To be the lead in the Medical Physics aspects of implementing new procedures and service developments within the PET service. This will involve developing and maintaining protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assist Radiographers and Clinicians in the performance of the PET service and ensure the technical quality and safety of these studies.
- Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for the entire facility
- Act as a operator under the IR(ME)R 2000 regulations for PET procedures
- Provide highly specialised scientific and technical support to the PET centre in order to assure safe patient care and staff work environment.
- To organise, perform, record and monitor routine QC/QA measurements and maintain associated records on all radiation related equipment (PET scanner, CT units, radionuclide calibrators, sample counters, radiation monitors, display devices etc.). This requires precise setting up and handling of delicate instruments.
- Liaise with equipment service engineers to co-ordinate routine servicing/upgrades and attendance in the event of breakdowns.
- To review and work to procedures and maintain and monitor records associated with compliance with the Radioactive Substances Act and Natural Resources Wales permits for work with radioactive material.
- Ensure that all transport of radioactive materials adheres to the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations and to provide necessary training to the appropriate staff/ contractors.
- Ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017), Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (2017), Environmental Permitting Regulations (2010) and Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

**Essential Criteria**

**Qualifications and Education**
- Medical Physics Expert on the RPA 2000 Register or eligibility for the register
- A member of the Health and Care Professions Council register of Clinical Scientists or eligibility for the register

**Knowledge, Skills and Experience**
- Substantial experience working at a Clinical Scientist within Positron Emission Tomography or Nuclear Medicine
- Able to demonstrate expert knowledge and understanding of Positron Emission Tomography or Nuclear Medicine, including relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines.
- Experience of using specialist software packages (e.g. PMod, Matlab, HERMES)
- Excellent Oral and Written Communication, with ability to influence senior decision making in relation to specialist discipline.

**Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving**
- Able to make decisions involving highly complex facts which require analysis.
- Evidence of ability to develop research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solution.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Ability to act as Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor for PETIC.
- Ability to act as Radioactive Waste Advisor for PETIC.
- Knowledge of other medical imaging techniques.
- Evidence of collaborations with industry
