The Role

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic researcher in the fields of protein science/biophysical assays/structural biology/chemical biology for a new role of Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Antimicrobial Drug Discovery to be based in the Biosciences Institute, within the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Microbiology is a major research focus of the Biosciences Institute covering a wide range of topics from fundamental microbiology ( Molecular and Cellular Microbiology ) within the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology ; to the study of pathogenic microbes and microbial-host interactions (Microbes in Health and Disease ).

The World Health Organisation has declared that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top 10 global health threats. A strategic focus of the Biosciences Institute is to support transformative research in AMR, with the vision to develop an antimicrobial drug discovery pipeline that builds upon our strengths in microbiology, coupled with our track-record in target-based drug discovery (in cancer therapeutics).

You will work closely with microbiologists and medicinal chemists to drive forward drug discovery programmes that focus on novel and innovative microbial targets. You will hold a relevant PhD and have undertaken significant previous training in early-stage discovery of small molecule or peptide therapeutics, gained in an academic, biotech and/or a pharmaceutical industry context, and have experience of working across multiple therapeutics projects. In particular, you will have experience in part of the target-based drug discovery process (e.g. target enablement/HTS assays/structure-based design).

Newcastle University is a world-class research-intensive university that aims to provide an outstanding educational experience to its students. In addition to delivering an active programme of research, you will also contribute to the planning and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.

The University has developed an Academic Job Summary Guidance document which summarises the range of activities that academic staff may be expected to perform.

Key Accountabilities
- To evaluate new therapeutic target opportunities and lead related research in target based antimicrobial drug discovery, working closely with microbiologists and medicinal chemists in-house and externally (with academic, public, and industrial collaborators).
- To develop and champion new strategies and experimental technologies relevant to antimicrobial drug discovery.
- To contribute to the strategic development of AMR research within the Faculty with a focus on the development of novel antimicrobial therapeutics.
- To work independently and to take a lead in developing and publishing work in internationally-recognised journals, to bid for research grants from prestigious funders, and participate in dissemination activities.
- To create and maintain strong collaborative links with other researchers based in the Institute, Faculty and University, and external partners working on AMR research and antibiotic discovery both nationally and internationally.
- Promote a positive research culture that encourages and celebrates a rich diversity in its workforce and that upholds the highest standards in research integrity, data reproducibility and collaborative team science.
- To lead and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessments; supervise undergraduate and Masters dissertations and postgraduate research students in research projects on antimicrobial drug discovery and related areas.
- To carry out management and administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant Institute and Faculty committees and activities as required by your line manager and the Institute Dean.
- To act as a personal tutor to a group of students, concerned with students’ academic achievements, and pastoral care.
