Farhana is a lovely 34-year-old lady who lives at home with her husband John, and their 5 children whose ages are between 1- 8 years old. John and Farhana have known each other since they were teenagers and met at work. They own their own home in the West End of Newcastle. Both John, Farhana and their children are Muslim, with their faith being very
important to them. This is a very family orientated family and includes the extended family who assist when they can in supporting Farhana. Farhana and her family have a complex health history due to genetic health conditions which have impacted most members of the family.
Farhana's suffers from severe fibromyalgia which causes her generalised pain muscle weakness and limited function. Farhana also has several other health related issues that limit her in being as “hands on” with her children as she would like to be. Farhana always carries an epi-pen due to several allergies and a weakened immune system.
Farhana has a right-hand weakness, and consequently struggles to use utensils or knives. Her hands can also cramp up after periods of use. Farhana is able to make herself small drinks and snacks, including toasts and biscuits, but on particularly bad days is unable to do this. As Farhana’s personal assistant you would be expected to carry out meal preparation with light domestic tasks to assist Farhana in preparing family meals and batch cooking.
Farhana explained that she cannot carry groceries or would have the energy to walk around a shop independently. She would like to be able to go to the shops and choose meals and items to cook with, with support. As Farhana’s personal assistant you would accompany Farhana to the shops to collect her groceries and other materials required to prepare and cook family meals. You may need to push Farhana’s wheelchair to assist in this choice of activity or support her with her crutches.
.There are some days, particularly after medical intervention or bad flare ups, Farhana cannot get out of bed. This is particularly after injections she has every 4 weeks, to support with the pain and her symptoms. Farhana is a very high risk of falls. This is due to the pain and limited function in her lower legs.
As Farhana’s personal assistant you would be required to be very active in supporting Farhana with the children after her 4-weekly visit to hospital for medical intervention, as she usually must remain in bed after her treatments.
Farhana is supported by her family with most personal care tasks, but you may be required to assist Farhana with some personal care should the need arise.
Farhana wants to be more independent and support her family around the home. She often has the motivation to contribute, but due to her physical health is unable to. As Farhana’s personal assistant you would be required to assist in laundry duties and general household tasks which may include picking up after the children or clearing away toys and crafts.
Farhana does not leave the house independently and as a result has no hobbies or social life outside of the home. Farhana must attend all appointments with another person including appointments that may include her children. Farhana’s children do attend social activities that you would be required to assist with and attend.
As Farhana’s personal assistant you must hold a Full clean driving License and be happy to drive either your own car or the client’s car.
You must be prepared to work during the Muslim festivities especially Eid, without judgement or prejudice.
