- Job description 1- As a Field Operation Lead Team Member you will be part of a small team on the ground delivering our maintenance program, which requires daily working on our river and coastal defence’s, to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution incidents.
You'll spend most of your time working within the team undertaking vegetation management, light construction duties and operating/maintaining assets managed by the Environment Agency.
This hands-on role involves:
- Leading and working together with field teams and contractors delivering maintenance work.
- Maintain the depot ensuring site compliance with COSHH, LOLER, PUWER and waste transfers.
- Coaching and mentoring Team Members and colleagues.
- Using tools and equipment to carry out tasks such as small projects and operation of plant and equipment.
- Providing response to flood and environmental incidents inside and outside of normal working hours by participating, training and exercising. Deploying sandbags, temporary barriers, mobile pumps and pollution equipment.
- Carrying out regular checks and inspections of equipment, such as tools, personal protective equipment, lifting equipment and vehicles.
- Communicating professionally with our partners, landowners and members of the public
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. We act quickly when there’s an emergency such as flooding or pollution. You’ll be expected to actively be part of the out of hours standby duty rotas, responding to operate our assets such as water pumps, barriers, and flood gates.

- The team 1- The Blackwater Operations Field Team is based at our Chelmsford and Southminster Depots.
Working closely with our Asset Performance Teams, the team delivers a varied maintenance work programme on rivers and watercourses in their catchment area. We also work closely with our Hydrometrics, Biodiversity and Environment Management teams.
We respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night and support across the country as part of mutual aid during large scale incidents.
- Experience/skills required 1- Essential:
- Ability to engage well with others
- The desire to be working out on the ground in all weather conditions
- Being flexible and able to adapt to changing situations or demands of the job
- Good communication skills which include contributing your ideas, listening to others and being clear and confident
- Able to think quickly and to solve problems and communicate your ideas clearly to others
- Work as a team to support others
- Skills to organise and manage your time well
- Basic understanding of IT, including smart phones and tablets, and willing to learn our in-house systems.
- Full UK or EU manual driving licence
- The energy to motivate and encourage others in your team on site.
- Practical ability and an interest in working outdoors, with an aptitude to learn
It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had:
- Have people management or leadership skills, and experience leading small teams.

As part of this role you'll be enrolled onto the Water Environment Worker apprenticeship, where you'll further develop your skills and work towards a Level 3 Nationally recognised qualification.
