**Job summary**:
A student placement with Scottish Forestry will provide you with opportunities to support and learn from the operational delivery team in one of our Conservancies. You’ll be working directly with Assistant Woodland Officers and Woodland Officers to help deliver grants and regulatory functions.
You’ll be supported on your development journey with ongoing guidance from your manager and input from our Learning and Skills Development team. There will be opportunities to attend training courses, alongside shadowing Assistant Woodland Officers and Woodland Officers, in order to learn about the implementation of silviculture and grants and regulations.
You may also have the chance to undertake short term placements with other teams within Scottish Forestry, for example to support and learn from colleagues based in our national teams which provide support across all Conservancies.
**Job description**:
You will work within the Conservancy team to gain practical experience, by supporting our Woodland Officers and Assistant Woodland Officers to:
- Undertake field-based measurements as part of regulatory roles for felling, environmental impact assessment regulations and tree diseases.
- Prepare for site visits, e.g. organising weekly work plans, making arrangements with agents and transferring maps onto mobile devices.
- Undertake inspections and producing reports on the implementation of Forestry Grant Scheme (FGS), forest plans and felling permissions, e.g. assessing stock density and establishment of trees.
**Person specification**:
**Experience**
Essential:
- Basic knowledge and awareness of forestry and land management principles and practices
- Good time management and the ability to prioritise workloads
Desirable:
- A working knowledge of Microsoft packages, including Teams
- Experience of working independently and as part of a team
- Experience of forestry operations or equivalent.
**Technical**
Essential:
- An understanding of the rural/land management sector
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
Desirable:
- Student, associate or professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF).
