The Project

Bycatch of non-target species in Welsh static net fisheries, particularly of protected, endangered and threatened species, such as seabirds, marine mammals and elasmobranchs, is poorly understood.. Current estimates are derived from UK-level observer programmes which are extrapolated more widely across each fishing metier and ICES Division. These often underestimate bycatch for larger, offshore fishing vessels, and overestimate it for smaller inshore vessels, by which the Welsh fishing fleet is largely characterised. Bycatch estimates applied to the Welsh fleet are further skewed by inclusion of English vessels. There is therefore an urgent need to better understand bycatch rates in Welsh net fisheries at a higher resolution, to inform appropriate management measures in future Fisheries Management Plans and avoid any potential loss of fishing opportunities for the Welsh fleet through disproportionate management. This project will fill this knowledge gap by:

- Characterising the Welsh static net fishery and the extent of the fishery in space and time through analysis of available VMS data
- Assessing its interaction with different non-target species and developing bycatch risk maps
- Quantifying the level of bycatch through design and execution of onboard observer programs
- Characterising the nature of bycatch in Welsh net fisheries by modelling the relationship between fishing effort and non-target species distributions/densities, across space and time

The research is a collaboration between Bangor University, the Welsh Fishermen’s Association, and Natural Resources Wales.

Purpose of the Job

The post is part of an established team working in the area of fisheries science. The project involves the collection of field data to better estimate bycatch rates in Welsh static net fisheries. The research will provide important evidence that will inform future Fisheries Management Plans in Wales.
