Your new role

As a Principal Data Architect, you will set the strategy for National Highway’s use of data, through data design, to meet business needs. You’ll work with senior accountable officers and boards to define data principles and objectives. You’ll also work closelywith technical and business design authorities to approve the strategy for data and ensure that systems are designed, upgraded, managed, decommissioned and archived in compliance with data policy across the full data life cycle.

What you’ll be leading on

Responsible for leading technical and business design authorities in order to approve their strategy for data
Work with senior business unit representatives to define data strategies, principles and objectives
Define and lead verification and validation activities to provide assurance that systems are designed, upgraded, managed, de-commissioned and archived in compliance with data policy across the full data life cycle
Responsible for the whole life management data models and metadata systems and help the business to interpret business needs
Provide oversight and advice to other data architects who are undertaking the design of data models and support the management of data dictionaries
Make sure that their respective teams are working to the standards set for the organisation by the chief data architect work with technical architects to make sure that organisation’s systems are designed in accordance with the appropriate data architecture
Technical support and advisory of all information and technology projects & servicers Development of a vision and strategy for Highways England to support development of the Road Investment Strategy 2020-2025
Delivery of Chief Data Office objectives
Hazard analysis of data related failures
Recommendation of risk acceptance criteria for data related failures
Supporting the risk assessment & evaluation of data products
Advice on risk exposure and risk forecast
Advice on preferred risk treatment
To be successful

You need to be to explain technical concepts to non-technical users, and ask questions that elicit an answer to a technical question but in a non-technical way
You’ll work with the Head of Data Architecture and Engineering, and your Data Engineering colleagues to conceive, develop, test and implement repeatable and re-usable architectural patterns to be used across the business and it’s services
You’ll have a good understanding of data modelling, both theory and practically - and be conversant in both relational and semantic modelling techniques
You’ll understand metadata management and how it can be exploited to automate data tasks for our engineers, as well as providing guidance on metadata standards and vocabularies
You will work closely with colleagues from Data Governance to ensure that our work to develop and maintain a working ontology of key concepts and entities is successful, creating a lasting and shared view of the organisations’ institutional knowledge
You’ll understand, and horizon scan, the data standards landscape, helping National Highways stay on top of industry best-practice and identifying opportunities to exploit standards to our benefit
