**Highways Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship (North Yorkshire)**

**Contract**: 2 Year Fixed-term, working Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm

We are looking to recruit Highways Apprentices to work from our depots throughout North Yorkshire. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your knowledge skills and competence in the workplace with the benefit of support from your learning provider, experienced colleagues and the wider business.

You will gain experience in all aspects of Highways Maintenance and will work towards achieving a Level 2 apprenticeship and a career as a Highways Skilled Operative. This opportunity is offered on a 24 month fixed term contract with progression opportunities into full time Highways Operative at the end.

As an Apprentice every day will be different. Not only will you work on a wide range of duties, you will be working outdoors in the variety of different environments and conditions that North Yorkshire offers: from towns and villages to very rural countryside. As a Highways Operative, you will be working as part of a team, so we are looking for applicants with good communication skills, who are able to follow instructions and have a willingness to work on a variety of tasks.

**Day to day tasks will vary but include**:

- Working safely at all times in line with company policy and current legislation.
- Understand and carry out the instructions being given by the Ganger/Site Supervisor and any other responsible person on site.
- Always comply with PPE policy
- Fully attend and engage with the college course and training you will receive
- Application of classroom theory practically back into the work environment.

The techniques and daily responsibilities you will learn will include to safely carry out repairs and improvements to a variety of built environment infrastructure such as:

- modular paving, kerb installation, bituminous macadam laying, concreting, pipe laying, hard and soft landscaping, drainage repairs and improvements.
- You will also learn about traffic management and seasonal maintenance activities.

It is essential you have aminimum of GCSE (or equivalent) grades of 9* - 4 (A - C) in English and Maths and be aged 16 or over to apply. Apprentices without this will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and Maths prior to the end-point assessment.

You must have attained or working towards a full UK Driving Licence.

Supported by experienced colleagues and learning providers, you'll develop your skills, knowledge, and competence in transport planning, working towards a Level 2 apprenticeship as an Operative.

The apprenticeship starts in August/September 2023 and will involve practical work on the ground and theory based working at the college.

These roles require our employees to operate machinery on the public highway and/or drive vehicle as a regular part of the job. NY Highways are committed to health and safety of our employees and of others including the general public and has a responsibility to ensure employees do not operate machinery or drive vehicles at work whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Individuals offered employment with NY Highways will undertake a drugs test as part of the recruitment clearance process, and as required during the course of employment.
