**JOB DESCRIPTION**

Job Title: Permanent full-time Centre Instructor

Supervised by: Senior Instructor Responsible to: Principal

Starting Salary: £20,440 per annum - £12.50/hr

Crosby Hall Educational Trust (CHET) is a residential outdoor activity centre and registered charity in North Liverpool. CHET is predominantly used by groups of primary school children from the region and aims to make the facilities of the Centre available to all children and young people regardless of handicap or the ability to pay. The role of a CHET Instructor is to develop, promote and deliver a range of fun, memorable and tailored indoor and outdoor activities. Instructors are responsible for ensuring an excellent standard of service to customers, including providing appropriate briefings on activity content and health and safety.

Hours: Your normal hours of work will be 36.5 hours per week during term time from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm on Fridays (includes one evening until 8.00 pm on Tuesday each week). Due to the nature of your role, you will be expected to work such additional hours _(including unsocial hours and hours outside term times)_ as are reasonably necessary to meet the variable demands of your position when required. Any additional hours will be paid as overtime.

All meals and drinks whilst on shift are included.

Instructors work closely with the Principal and Senior Instructor to plan activities and ensure effective communication with the other Instructors and CHET staff.

**Main Duties**
- Deliverindoor and outdoor activities to children/young people in accordance with CHET’s aims and objectives to provide a fun and safe experience and seeking to exceed customer expectations
- Lead and manage groups of children/young people, inspire confidence, give encouragement, demonstrate activities and provide clear instructions and explanations. You may also have to support people who may be nervous about taking part in activities
- Deal with challenging behaviour and remain calm in difficult or dangerous situations.
- Lead activity courses for disadvantaged young people
- Planning and preparing activities
- Instructing in specialist areas such as archery, fencing and water-based activities (rafting)
- Making sure all equipment and facilities are safe, explaining safety procedures and dealing with accidents
- Ensuring all customers are correctly fitted with safety equipment
- Ensure that all kit is checked and returned to the stores
- Checking weather conditions, assessing hazards and managing risks
- Ensure the welfare and safety of customers throughout courses
- Be responsible for personal health and safety and conversant with current legislation relevant to the safe running of activities
- Undertake any training and professional development as and when required
- Assist with the running of fundraising events
- Ensure excellent customer service at all times
- Undertake any other reasonable duties required for the safe and harmonious running of the site as may be determined by the Senior Instructor or Principal

**Skills/Abilities/Knowledge**
- Punctual and reliable
- Friendly and outgoing with a passion for delivering outdoor adventure and education
- Conscientious and responsible and capable of taking control of a group of children/young people
- Self-motivated and enjoy working in the great outdoors
- A good team player and communicator
- Ability to motivate and encourage people, utilising strong communication and people skills
- Ability to remain calm in difficult situations and identify solutions to problems
- Awareness of Health and Safety law and risk management procedures
- Be flexible to the changing demands of the post
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of why Equal Opportunities are important in employment and service delivery
- Ability to respect and value the different experiences, ideas and backgrounds of others
- Have an awareness of and display a commitment to the relevant legislation and guidance in working practices in relation to the safeguarding of children and young people
- Must be in good health

**Qualifications/Experience**

**Essential**:

- Experience of working with children/young people

**Desirable**:

- Experience delivering outdoor activities
- Specific activity qualifications such as Archery GB Instructor Award and National Water Safety Awareness
- Experience of planning and resourcing outdoor activities
- Experience of checking and maintaining outdoor equipment
- First Aid qualification
