This is an exciting and new opportunity to join the Global Breakthrough Innovation team as a Senior Sustainability Lead. This role is crucial in leading, shaping, enabling, and delivering tangible sustainable solutions to drive Diageo’s ESG goals. This position requires vast and experimental innovations to assess ambiguities and develop and implement new ideas beyond our current capabilities, portfolios, and core delivery systems. It serves two interlinking business imperatives - our growth ambitions and meeting our Society 2030 mission.

This role reports to the Global Sustainability Breakthrough Innovation Director. The Senior Sustainability Lead will be accountable for delivering key pillars of the Breakthrough Innovation Portfolio, from early exploration of ideas to enabling the integration of disruptive projects into the business at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Define, structure, and implement next generation sustainable innovation pipeline that pushes existing boundaries and capabilities to propel new businesses models to achieving Diageo's ESG ambitions.

Establish and nurture a robust network of external partners to deliver required technical solutions, from early discovery and exploration to complete validation, enabling breakthroughs into Diageo's value chain.

Drive successful approval of future-facing breakthroughs and sustainability solutions as well as managing their effective operationalization and impact in key markets globally.

Lead the consumer and technical tests, learning, and piloting of breakthrough innovations to promote systemic change and determine their carbon-reducing value, growth potential, and strategy needed for successful implementation within Diageo.

Partner with supply, digital, procurement, and R&D technical teams to ensure pilots are designed and tested to meet all our technical standards and quality requirements.

Share sustainable innovation intelligence across the sectors, prioritization, technical expertise, and business assessment on new strategies and approaches.

Lead cross-functional risk analysis for key sustainability platform projects finding opportunities and liabilities to be addressed in the breakthrough innovation strategy as well as defined key targets to monitor.

Build solid internal and external ecosystems and translate technical challenges and solutions into tangible and scalable business opportunities.

Leadership Responsibilities- Reports to the Global Sustainability Breakthrough Innovation Director- Lead multiple cross-functional and complex projects comprising internal and external partnerships to excel in ambiguous and novel environments.- Actively shapes the Sustainability Breakthrough agenda to ensure Diageo sustainability is dynamically expanding boundaries and innovation capabilities.- Influence and inspire internal and external partners to support and create joined-up ways of working.- Create solid and collaborative interdependencies across supply areas (from technical to manufacturing) to enable teams to implement at pace and make bold decisions while taking accountability.- Lead critical platforms to enable strategy development in critical areas with robust, clear decision-making and effective communication.

Financial- Understands conventional business finance (P&L, OH, OIE, Capex, etc.) and Venture/new business financing models to implement novel sustainability projects and programs effectively.- Run sizable project budgets in service of Sustainability Breakthroughs.- Strong understanding of COGs, GMs, and costing processes and their integration into decision-making on breakthrough innovations.

Experience Required- 10 years of experience in leading highly complex portfolios with a consistent record of delivering disruptive or novel products, processes, and technologies within interconnected ecosystems.- 3+ years of supervisory/people management experience of cross functional teams including indirect reports and multiple collaborators- Master's degree in science/engineering fields with appropriate business experience in projects and platform management.- Sustainability specialization or relevant work experience in sustainable innovation.- Exceptional technical and business communication skills with the ability to navigate ambiguous environments at all levels.- Deep knowledge of a variety of sustainability topics such as product development, packaging alternatives, and environmental issues (e.g., climate, water, carbon, etc.).- Good balance of strong technical/scientific skills and business acumen, enabling commercialization of new ideas and strategic business approaches.- Skilled at delivering innovations through partnerships, ventures, and consumer approaches.- Solid analytical skills associated with agile execution to create reliable strategies from scratch, translating complex technical solutions in
