**ESEL - Band 3 - Medical Laboratory Assistant - Clinical Biochemist**
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership combines the pathology services of three London NHS trusts: Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
This partnership, which is hosted by Barts Health, brings together the strengths of each of the three trusts’ pathology services into a single NHS organisation, which will be entirely focused upon the provision of pathology. Its purpose is to provide patients and clinicians with a high-quality, cost-effective service that ensures the long-term sustainability of NHS pathology services in east and south east London and beyond.
The partnership operates laboratories across seven hospital sites: Homerton University Hospital, Newham Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, University Hospital Lewisham and Whipps Cross Hospital.
The post holder is expected to work as part of a busy Blood Sciences Laboratory team to undertake routine pathology work and provide general laboratory assistance. The core duties will involve receipting and processing of diagnostic specimens, using the laboratory IT to input and extract information.
Furthermore, the job role involves basic laboratory procedures and pre-analytical processing of diagnostic specimens, analyser operation and troubleshooting tasks. Clerical work, checking stocks and supplies and a variety of other laboratory duties are required to provide support to the Biomedical Scientists. Following standard operating procedures to ensure good laboratory practice. In-house training is provided and the postholder will be expected to show satisfactory performance in the training scheme for all MLA staff. The post holder will offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist the Department in the provision of a high quality service.
The post holder might be required to work across the ESEL laboratories at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract, which may entail travel and working at different hospitals.
- To receive, sort and assign laboratory specimen number to samples and request forms on arrival to the laboratory.
- To check and verify patient demographics recorded on specimen, request form and Laboratory information systems.
- To register received samples into the laboratory information systems and record nonconformity in accordance to the standard operating procedure.
- Distribute specimens to the appropriate laboratory work area.
- Undertake specimen preparation in readiness for examination procedures, storage or distribution to other laboratories. This may include; determination of volume of specimen collected, sample centrifugation, sample separation and division, and packaging of sample.
- Required to operate automated laboratory equipment in accordance to standard operating procedures.
- To sort specimens for storage and retrieve those requiring additional processing, distribution to other laboratory work area.
- Undertake disposal of specimens and laboratory waste in accordance to standard operating procedures.
